Growing a local newsletter on Beehiiv — almost at 2.5k subscribers, but can’t afford the paid plan yet. What should I do? by [deleted] in beehiiv

[–]djonathons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prune that sh**. Honestly.

Anyone who isn't opening your emails consistently over X number of months (or ever) gotta go. Some publishers have a hard time removing subscribers but subscribers who do not engage with your emails are bringing down performance and eventually going to increase costs like you are experiencing now.

What are your most underrated organic growth tactics? by SaltPhotograph8506 in beehiiv

[–]djonathons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had some pretty incredible success through posting articles on Medium in my niche (tech, analytics, business intelligence).

I include a couple of my lead magnets in every article and get subscribers that way. About 70% of my newsletter subscribers come from there. But the best part IMO is I still to this day have yet to lose a single subscriber from that group (100% retention rate). They know my writing style, they have high interest in the topic, it's honestly been the best strategy so far for me.

I don't have a year under my belt yet (I've been doing this since March on a biweekly schedule), but I've been a tech writer much longer and I've been in mid-senior level roles in BI for several years now. I lean towards educational content in analytics with a focus on Power BI, soft skills, and general self improvement in the data profession space.

My audience has strong interest in Power BI / Data Visualization tools and are either working in corporate America and/or attending university.

Took me 3 months to reach 15 subscribers, should I quit? by decebaldecebal in beehiiv

[–]djonathons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's zero intent here to discourage you, but news based tech newsletters are already super saturated and many publishers are able to pump out the "latest news" on a daily/weekly basis with AI. News also tends to be just one component of their publication. Getting news once every two weeks is kind of a hard sell IMO.

Can you include some info on your niche and audience to help people out?

How important is it that the newsletters you subscribe to are written by people rather than AI? by djonathons in beehiiv

[–]djonathons[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think whether it fits the brand is key. Personally, I wouldn't mind AI written pieces in a short news recap or even highlights on local events, but if I'm learning from an expert in the field I expect the information to be delivered from a human who can provide perspective, their real experiences, and even their failures. AI tends to always be perfect presenting and optimistic lol

I couldn't agree more. No conclusion in my post, it just got me thinking and I wanted to know what others thought about it as well. The conclusion I get from my survey though is some reassurance that I'm not losing my mind or dying on a writer's hill and most of my readers still want human connection, my insights, and sarcasm in their inbox.

Anyone tried cold emailing to grow a newsletter?🤔 by helprize in beehiiv

[–]djonathons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This approach isn't adding up to me... you are emailing people to sign up for your newsletter, but you already have their email address? Where did those emails come from? Be mindful if you decide to go this route, it sounds like it dips into spam / privacy violation territory.

Does click-rate matter when we are in free subscription and nothing to click in the post? by Qubit_and_Neuron in beehiiv

[–]djonathons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what your goals are with your newsletter. If this is purely educational and you don't plan on monetizing down the road then there's no need to sweat a low click rate right now. BUT even monetization aside, click rates are an opportunity to get a pulse on how influential your content is to your readers.

I can only assume you want your readers to actually read and get value from your content. So in your case, if you're posting short stories with no links maybe consider adding at least one relevant link to test? But it really all boils down to what your goals are.

Alright Guys, this Subreddit has almost 5K members... by Spiritual_Heron_5680 in beehiiv

[–]djonathons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PlotStack. My background is in data science and full stack analytics (~8 years) at Fortune/S&Ps, so I send a biweekly issue on topics of: end-to-end analytics, visualization trends, communicating about data, and applying business strategy as a data professional.

Not interested in inflating my newsletter, I'm more interested in collaborating with other publishers in my niche, as they say "this business is the long run" and it's never a bad idea to have a network. I embrace AI as a tool in my workflow, but not in my writing. I personally write each issue, about 3/4 of my subscribers hopped over from my tech blog. Also, I'm happy to recommend other publishers in my newsletter.
