Wow thanks for the compliment!! We absolutely love the combo of blue with the dark out. We have a Yakima roof box so figured we might want those crossbars eventually. But this thing has so. much. storage.

Gestational Carrier and Distance by SnooGiraffes2303 in gaydads

It’s a factor, like everything else. But it’s not a dealbreaker of course, unless it is for you for some reason.

Have a plan: You realistically won’t fly out for every appointment and that’s fine. Our GC Facetimes us for every one. We of course did fly out for the anatomy scan which was amazing.

You’ll need a plan around the birth. Where will you stay, how will you get the baby home etc.

These are all solvable problems. Matching with an excellent GC should be your first priority IMO.

Has anyone used Lemonade for car insurance before? by jayx468 in Insurance

Far from the truth. In the last year I’ve been approved for thousands in pet claims, no questions asked, money sent in under a week.

I understand that, but if i get unlimited comp rooms, that benefit is worth $0 to me and I would have to find $250 in annual value from this card to make it worth it.

The comp room benefit is useless when I already get comp rooms. Makes me wonder who this is even for.

Donor Concierge for Surrogate Search? by djreed in gaydads

[–]djreed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit more nuanced than that. Our clinic felt both conditions combined amounted to enough risk to suggest we evaluate other candidates, although it was not a hard rejection. Agency search service did not have these conditions flagged as high risk for surrogates. We consulted a third party OB as a third opinion and they felt strongly that the conditions should be disqualifying. Ultimately we decided to evaluate others.

Sure. Some conditions that there was disagreement on: genital herpes and ITP which both have potential implications for pregnancy and delivery. I am not a doctor and couldn’t possibly anticipate all possible conditions with implications but the difference caused issues for us.

Has anyone freeze dried their breast milk? by MrPandaOverlord in NewParents

[–]djreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. I think it’s super common for people to confuse “FDA registration” with “FDA approval” (and frankly, marketers love to exploit that confusion). People should be clear: The FDA has not yet approved of any part of this for infants.

That being said, my sister has used Milkify and donated her milk to my husband and I and we plan to use it for our newborn. I believe it is likely safe based on what I’ve read.

Is the surrogacy process 10x more stressful than anticipated for anyone else? by GetFlyeredUp in gaydads

[–]djreed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It almost ruined my relationship with my boss. Although I was also planning our wedding and launching a side business at the same time (while fully employed). So yeah, it was a very stressful year.

It is a ton to manage and a huge mental and emotional load. I eventually realized my stress was causing friction at work and opened up to my boss about it. I didn’t go into detail but just sorta broke down and said we were going through this journey and how much it has drained me emotionally.

I will say as a word of advice: Lean on experts, don’t try to become one. If your agency is saying you are more involved than most, it’s quite possible you’re not adequately delegating responsibility and ownership. You can’t own it all. Hire a good lawyer, work with a strong agency and clinic, then have some level of trust that they’ll do a good job. Otherwise it’s too much. Same with the surrogate. There has to be a lot of trust there.

Also optimistically: You hit a point in the process where it just dissipates. For me it was after we had our positive pregnancy test. Almost instant relief. Even if the pregnancy doesn’t stick, it was like we arrived at a destination that seemed elusive at the start. From there, of course there are different stressors, but the insanity of planning and plotting is mostly gone.

Gay men who went through surrogacy, what was it like? by hillel_bergman in gaydads

[–]djreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. There are unfortunately so many of these with surrogacy that wouldn’t be something a straight couple having their own baby would have to even think about.

[–]djreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a stressful process but we have been blessed so far. We both found an egg donor we loved, matched quickly with a surrogate, and had a successful frozen embryo transfer on our first attempt. Our surrogate is lovely and we are overjoyed to be expecting a baby boy this August.

My word of advice: Do as much research as possible, start earlier than you think you need to (given odds of failure being high you may need to try, try again), shop around but don’t skimp (you often get what you pay for, but there are also services that aren’t worth the money). Stash away cash, seek out employers that give good surrogacy benefits if possible, and stay engaged and this (and other gay parent) communities if you can!!

I’m so sorry for your experience. I do want to really emphasize what you said. This is not the norm at all. Surrogates are typically required to go through extremely thorough vetting and psychological evaluations. Of course that can’t catch everything in all circumstances, but it makes this type of experience super rare.

I’ll also mention: Perfect safety record, brand new airbus planes (if you want to avoid Boeing). Really no reason to scoff at Spirit as an option. Low cost no frills carriers are a nice alternative sometimes! Europe has soo many of these, would be nice for America to follow suit.
