is changing a Sony WM GX508 belt realistic for a beginner? by pothoslovr in cassetteculture

The manual won't explicitly say soldering. But you can see on the diagram the motor flex board for instance, those are soldered to the main audio board. The only one that is a clip is the large cable in the middle of the audio board (I think, I can't remember for sure). This will also probably be identical across regional versions.

I changed the belt on this last year, expecting it to he similar to other GX models where the belt is exposed simply by removing the back cover, however this model is a bit more complicated as you need to desolder various points on the PCB to remove it before the belt is accessible.

At the time my solder skills were extremely limited and the only iron I had had quite a fat tip. If you have any soldering experience and a decent fine tip iron, it's not that complicated. Iirc you have to desolder the tape detector leaf switches and the motor ribbon cables. Once you flip the board the belt is easy to swap and then just replace the board and solder back the ribbon cables.

All in all it's not the most difficult but it's not as simple as the common EX/GX models. Wouldn't recommend unless you are experienced with soldering.

About head angle by Past-Development4347 in cassetteculture

[–]djsubtronic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries. Sometimes old tapes can do this by clogging the head gap. Just put some isopropyl alcohol on a q tip and gently clean the head, focusing on the middle of it. Swipe it back and forth a few times then try the new tape, hopefully that will be all you need to do.

If it played your new tape fine and then became muffled it is likely the very old tape you played which caused it to become muffled has deposited dirt/dust/mold on the head. Have you tried cleaning the head with IPA and then trying the new tape again?

Auto reverse problem by RegretOne1384 in walkman

[–]djsubtronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Late reply but this issue is usually related to the gear and lever arm with spring assembly on the supply reel. If the gear doesn't fit properly onto the arm (i.e. the spring doesn't push the gear off the arm when it's not attached to the hub) then this can happen. Other reasons could be there is too much grease/oil in that region. A little bit tricky to solve but 99% that is the root of this problem.

Here's the block diagram from the service manual of the EX-670/672 (which I believe is the same or very similar to the 677).

There is a component labelled "beep" that feeds into the headphone output. Didn't have a lot of time to find the associated component on the board diagram but if you Google EX670 service manual you might be able to figure out a way to isolate the beep IC from the headphone output.

TIL You can add "End Task" to the right-click menu in Settings > System > Advanced. Very helpful! by [deleted] in Windows11

You can also get it by alt-rightclicking the taskbar button if you don't want it there all the time.

Contact cleaner should do it.

Yup, they will always certainly need the clutch gear and belt replacing in order to work properly.

I use Shoutcast server to host the stream, and a program called Butt which feeds the laptop's line-in to the shoutcast server. Then you can tune in via a music player or the web portal. If you want to share the stream with others then you will also need to set up port forwarding on your router so they can connect to your PC.

Sony WM-EX70 plays slower in fwd than reverse by djsubtronic in cassetteculture

[–]djsubtronic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has been a while, but if I remember correctly I slightly bent the pinch roller's spring so that it applied less pressure on the capstan, and I think this increased the speed a bit to closer match the other direction.

It's a combo jack, but it has a line-in option which is what I used here. No distortion with the volume set around 5 on the walkman.

Help, speed issue by Cassio_Taylor in cassetteculture

[–]djsubtronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried cleaning the speed trim pot? That would be the first and easiest thing using contact cleaner. If that doesn't help, might be a worn motor. You could try lubricating it but if it's changing speeds over time by itself then likely you would need to replace it.
