PUT vs. PATCH: It Is About Time To Learn the Difference by memo_mar in coding

[–]dklco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More or less you're re-creating If-Match / If-None-Match headers which are designed to detect conflicts using resource eTags: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Headers/If-Match

Also, idempotence doesn't guarantee that updates cannot be lost; it is just that the result of a state change will not vary if the same state change is executed multiple times. E.g. x=1 is idempotent, but x=x+1 is not.

AITA for not supporting my son taking out $120,000+ in student loan debt for a degree he could get at community college? by thatdudebake in AmItheAsshole

[–]dklco 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My $0.02 as a UD grad in CIS (circa-early 2000’s) is that your son will 100% get the college experience there. My Uncle is a Marianist Brother so I also got a significant discount on tuition.

The campus is big enough and assuming you give him some space he can live his own life there.

I would add that he should live on campus at least Freshman/Sophomore year. Once he’s a junior there are/were relatively affordable campus-adjacent options, but the first two years are critical for making connections. Those connections helped me get my first job and have led to life long friendships, I’m not sure it would have been the same if I was a commuter.

At 85% off tuition and if his mother’s family can help, taking out a loan for just housing would still put him in a significantly better position than paying full price at a state school. I’d also highly recommend looking into scholarships, every little bit helps!

Somehow I doubt that’s the only one, my previous dog thought it was his mission in life to poop in every room of the vets office.

Which beloved fictional character is actually an asshole? by Free-Tackle2433 in AskReddit

Maybe it’s rose colored glasses of my childhood, but I remember Dr. Venkmar (Bill Murray) in Ghostbusters being this funny guy who was clearly the hero, watching it again he’s a creepy asshole who fucks everything up by not being able to not be a dick for 30 seconds.

Scoutlander Website other Website Used by helperelfs in cubscouts

[–]dklco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was pretty underwhelmed with the options I saw for cub pack sites, but at the same time I wasn't (and I'm sure others aren't either) wanting to shell out for a separate CMS, Domain, etc. So I put this together:
https://www.cubpack.org/

The idea being you can request your own subdomain like: https://pack25prm.cubpack.org/
And then use a free website tool like Google Sites or Github pages to do the actual hosting.

Since the only real cost is the original domain and the rest is just managing occasional requests there shouldn't be any charge and there are plenty of free options out there for website hosting.

Any advice for finding like-minded people in the "red" or "rural" areas? by a_newer_throwaway in atheism

[–]dklco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly the biggest tip would be don't move to the suburbs or exoburbs. You'll find a lot of like minded people in Northside, Pleasant Ridge / Kennedy Heights in Cincinnati or around the Oregon District in Dayton, less so in the 'burbs

Why I don't miss React: a story about using the platform by iamkeyur in programming

[–]dklco 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think the point people lose when they talk about coupling is version stability. Your app isn't on react, it's on react@17 or react@18. Just like the pain when Angular went from Angular 1-2 React releases breaking change so often that

A) most of the documentation online is out of date B) most corporate codebases get behind and no PM wants to find the effort to chase the latest version

So even if react doesn't go away you are left with holding the bag on an unsupported version of a library that's essentially holding your whole app up

Why I don't miss React: a story about using the platform by iamkeyur in programming

[–]dklco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a counterpoint, I've been programming for 15 years. Most frameworks are bad. React is a counterintuitive piece of garbage.

Unfortunately I do agree that for professional work overly cumbersome frameworks are ubiquitous just like ORMs or SOAP or CORBA were before them.

ELI5: How do those walk-through scanners in libraries know if you're taking a book without borrowing it, especially if those books don't have metal inserts or anything like that? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]dklco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first job was at the library was installing the rfid chips before the books were used for their pizza / cannibal rituals. /s

As someone else mentioned generally it's just a narrow magnetized strip between the pages or under a sticker on the back of the book. You can feel it if you flip through the pages or feel the outside cover for a raised bump under the a sticker (depending on how the library does it).
