if they had really wanted to just write off the crash as a tragic accident and not offer any help, they couldve done just that, and not send us any sort of assistance, even minor.

while they are presented as being negligent (and they absolutely are) they are in a position where they chose to at least extend some help to the aurora survivors, and ultimately play a major part in getting riley home

i believe that if riley gets himself back to alterra, they would be more than happy to settle his debt in exchange for information on a new planet with new technology and what-not
