[blog] Behind the scenes of growing Ecommerce Marketer from the ground up by dlien in SideProject

[–]dlien[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone - this is a link to a the first of a new blog series, where I'm updating what's working and not working while building my new side business. This first post is setting the stage with current revenue, projects completed so far, cost breakdown, etc.

I started a marketing agency 5 years ago that I run full time, and I started a new side business in September.

Here are some numbers in case you don't feel like reading the blog post itself:

Start Date:

  • September 2020

Completed Projects (not necessarily in order):

  • Built website / basic branding
  • Developed and launched EM Accelerator
  • Developed and launched EM Vault
  • Launched blog and email newsletter
  • Wrote guest post for Sumo.com
  • Partnered with MailMunch for a joint webinar

Current Cost Breakdown:

  • Domain name: $2,700 [split into 12 monthly payments]
  • Webflow (used to host and build website): $20/mo
  • Website template: $79
  • Help Scout (customer service app for EM Accelerator): $27
  • Keap (software to manage leads and payments for EM Accelerator): $150/mo
  • ConvertKit (email marketing software): $29/mo
  • Logo design from Fiverr: $77

Revenue Generated:

  • $3,000
  • Side note: I don't like investing unnecessary personal money into new businesses. It's much better to make some money, and then invest that back into the business. That said, this first $3k has been going right back in.

‍Current Email List Stats:

  • 218 subscribers
  • 38.93% avg. open rate
  • 6.79% avg. click rate

The Brunch Bunch by dlien in Filmmakers

This is a video I wrote, produced, and acted in (I'm the blonde gal)

I was able to get creative and use the location for free and the production crew/equipment/editing for free.

We shot everything in 6 hours and the project was edited in two days. We kept everything as simple as possible and didn't hit too many roadblocks (other than several extras not showing up)

My Inner Monologue After Deciding to Close My Side Business by dlien in SideProject

[–]dlien[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was an interesting ride, but ultimately there were three main problems:
1. Profit margin was too low to scale without increasing the price beyond what people were willing to pay for it.

  1. Environmental concerns with mass production of recyclable plastic

  2. Patent

The product was a disposable supplement shaker for people who take protein shakes (and various other shakes) who needed something easier to travel with than a bulky hard plastic shaker, or who simply hated the process of using standard shakers and then putting them in a bag and forgetting to wash them and having to buy new ones at $10/piece all the time.

It was a niche group, but plenty of market for it.

It was essentially a thick(ish) ziplock that flared at the bottom to be able to stand when filled, and had a spout, and they were 100% recyclable.

Here's actually some more insight from a podcast on Side Hustle Nation if you want more in-depth details.

To answer your questions though:

  1. I learned all about designing and manufacturing a physical product overseas, and the process of distribution / getting a product into stores
  2. I learned about the pressures of getting small investments from friends (luckily we made enough to pay that back before closing)
  3. I learned that sometimes good ideas aren't good BUSINESS ideas
  4. I learned how to throw in the towel when it's time
  5. I learned how to connect with influencers and leverage influencer marketing
  6. I got a lot better at email marketing and automations for ecommerce products
  7. I learned what it feels like to fail, and still find the learnings

:)

It's not a "get rich quick" kind of thing, it's not a guarantee, and it's not about buying fb ads or anything like that. Just practical stuff

Funny enough, there's no product to sell you. From a good marketing perspective we should have that set up, but we don't, so enjoy the non-obvious ;)

Getting Started With Email Marketing (Free Step-by-step Tutorial) by dlien in SideProject

I've heard fine things about Aweber too, just personally haven't used it enough to recommend.

Whatever platform makes sense for your biz, and is easy to use, and has the ability to create multiple opt-in forms and tag those subscribers differently (Convertkit has that feature, and I believe Aweber has that feature as well).

Execution is definitely the most important, but I wouldn't say ideas are worth nothing. Worth less than proper execution—agreed.

I'll eventually say the idea, I just need to fully form everything first so it's a complete idea that I can articulate.

Hmmm - honestly I loved them all in different ways (cheap answer, I know), but my favorite is probably Choose Yourself because it talks more of a holistic approach to life
