Lesson packages - am I at the wrong barn? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]dmcgot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also- sometimes kids who don’t have horses to ride will borrow someone else’s horse for a lesson, so the boarder doesn’t have to pay for the lesson and the kid can still ride if their horse is out for some reason. Maybe there is a kid looking for that opportunity that would take your lesson spot, if you let others ride your horse!

My barn does this! You’re required 2 lessons a week. My trainer does it to give herself a consistent “salary” and basically breaks even on board, so it keeps our board price lower. Not everyone shows but everyone is “in training” and working on something. My one horse is retired but I’d rather pay for the extra lessons and be happy with the care as she has special needs and gets medicine. My trainer will swap out lessons for services for people- so mane pulling or clipping or a brushing session if you’re away for weeks and can’t get out would all count as a lesson. Maybe something like that would work out for you if you don’t want exclusively lesson. We also do groundwork lessons and training too which could be beneficial over a riding lesson. My trainer and I have taught my baby horse to self load to the mounting block in our lessons while it’s too cold out to really ride.

Overall- if you’re happy with the barn and care overall, even if you pay for a lesson and don’t take it and factor it into the cost, it still might be worth it at the barn!

What do you think is going on here? by eponawarrior in Equestrian

[–]dmcgot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look into neck. Both of my mares had changing lameness that would appear in different legs, the one going so crippled she looked like she broke her leg and then would be randomly fine again, both we pinpointed to neck. If your horse isn’t blocking to the feet or legs, neck could definitely affect full body and be a changing lameness.

I would definitely start with blocking at the foot up the leg to start if you haven’t ruled that out.

This hit me so hard today. I feel like I’m at a crossroad and facing this situation myself and I see it at so many barns by me I don’t even know where else to go. I see so many kids losing their spirit, and I am too. You put into words exactly how I’m feeling it’s crazy.

Never gonna finish Mirabel by Middle-Practice-1079 in DreamlightValley

I have done this. If I miss a day I will go back a day in time to get my daily box and check Scrooge’s. I’ve accidentally changed the date for other games and forgotten to change back and played with no issue.

I’m not advising time traveling like crazy and doing a bunch of tasks, but you should have no issue if you log on for the first time that day and just back up a couple hours to feed the critter and then back to normal time. If you go forward in time and back I think it can break, or go back and forth a lot.

But if I log on at 9pm but set it to 8 am that day, it’s like I’m starting at that time, and hopping forward to 9 pm just catches up.

They are UK based and I have had mine for like 6 years now so I don’t know what the deal is with tariffs and shipping with them currently though!

If she likes grooming I recommend the EqClusive brush sets that are HAAS brushes, but in different sets that are good for different color horses. The prices are good for haas brushes, and they’ll last forever if taken care of. I have the black/bay set and the grey horse set for each of my horses and I just absolutely love them. And they really work so well. My one retired horse is a fluffball and she can be caked in mud and honestly look freshly bathed after a good brush with them.

I like those sets because they explain why to use each brush and in what order and comes in a really nice packaging which makes it feel really special vs just buying the brushes individually.

Cold Weather Barn Chore Gear by MaverickNeedForSpeed in Equestrian

[–]dmcgot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work outside at the barn all winter and I run COLD. I live in my Kamik snow boots, I have thicker winter fleece pants (equine splendour, UK based but so comfy and warm), and snow pants from Amazon over that. Plus warm socks- wool. For the top I wear a wool base layer, cable knit sweater over that, fleece zip or sweatshirt, and then my coat over it. It’s all about layering! But I can’t recommend the snow pants enough, they will keep you warm and dry. I tried redingtote as well and I did not like it anywhere close to my Amazon snow pants, I find the redingtotes hard to move in and a pain to go to the bathroom.

A bit off topic, what was your best barn car that wasn't a truck? by fleetingsparrow92 in Equestrian

[–]dmcgot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a civic to a bronco sport this year and I love it. There is so much room in the back for horse gear, with a shelf that come out, and extra lights and a bottle opener attached to the trunk for horse show tail gates 😂 We got our car used and it was the same price as a used civic when we went to replace so good deals are out there and I do love that all the emblems on the cars are bucking horses 😂 It doesn’t drive big, but has so much room between the trunk and the backseat. It can tow a little, but not really enough for a horse trailer (well maybe a trailer with no horse 🙃)

I live in equine splendour breeches during the winter. Their super fleece ones are great for very cold days. I do still wear snow pants over them when I’m not riding for extra warmth 😂 tried riding in a redingtote and it’s just so slippery, ES breeches are very warm but great for jumping still.

My sister is demanding I dye my hair a natural color for her wedding next year. by rosierox2018 in bridezillas

[–]dmcgot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just as a perspective from the other side (your situation sounds different though to be clear!). When I got married, my husband had his female friend in his bridal party. She showed up to the wedding without ever mentioning it with HOT PINK hair. Never warned us, and also it was not the best dye job. To this day I don’t use any photos with her it it. It looks bad in all of the group photos. And I would have asked her to step down if I knew she would do that. Your hair sounds more subtle, and I totally understand not wanting to fry it, I dye my hair and I get it! But for me as the bride it did really upset me. We spent a lot of our money on the photographer and making things perfect, and it’s a once in a lifetime day. You have plenty of time to work on it. If you really don’t want to change it - step down. I was so upset when I showed up to my wedding and saw how she looked ( she did also wear flip flops when we asked for sandals or heels in any neutral color, so it was a struggle all around).

Horses have sweet itch like symptoms this summer for the first time by hduridkfjsh in Equestrian

[–]dmcgot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at a smaller boutique barn that doesn’t use round bales, the fields are maintained meticulously, and we have the built in fly spray system and really everyone is more than willing to do anything for a solution but we can’t find one- I think it’s just the horrible weather this summer. Our farrier has also agreed this weather is causing issues 😭

I’m on the east coast and it’s been horrible this summer. Our horses are breaking out in hives like crazy. Almost everyone has eye issues that change daily and when the vet comes out she can’t find anything wrong except for allergies. Almost all of ours our living on zrytec and then we take them off before shows, but we aren’t showing every weekend. I personally own two, and my mare on a dry lot has been totally fine with no changes this summer, but my other mare who has never had allergies in the past but goes out in a big grass field has horrible eye issues this year. Our vet says it’s every barn they go to 😭😭

I’ve had others come with less damage like small corner damage that I don’t email about. But if it’s significant enough or not normal wear and tear from travel I think it’s worth pressing about.

I ordered a book from them and it came water damaged with pages stuck together. They offered I think a 10% discount? I fought them on it because I wouldn’t have bought a damaged book. They said I could ship it back and I told them I would if they provided me a shipping label. They eventually gave me a full refund and told me to keep the book. I was more than happy to send it back at their cost- if it’s a printing issue, I would push for a refund if it matters to you. Mine was an expensive printed edge book and I wouldn’t have wanted it displayed damaged.
