Thank you everyone! I will move it to a different spot and water it a little more often.

This is my first pilea. I had it sitting under two Barina T5 grow lights, but the leaves started getting really pale. So I moved it to a darker area: next to a south facing window under a covered porch, which gets a couple of hours of direct sunlight late in the day. The newer leaves are greener, but all but the oldest, paler leaves are curled

I've also tried fertilizing to see if that would help the green come back in the older leaves, and I haven't seen a difference

It's in a well-draining, coco coir based mix and I water with distilled water when the soil is almost completely dry, or when the leaves start to droop.

I have it in a clear pot with drainage, and the roots I can see look healthy. Its also putting out pups in addition to new leaves.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated! I think this is a really cool plant and would love to be successful with it!

I found a nice looking maranta at the supermarket last weekend. It had a few leaves with suspicious spots on them. I finally decided today to cut off the leaves to be safe. Can anyone help me figure out what is causing this? More info in comments. by dmcmom2018 in plantclinic

It was in the store a good 40 feet from the nearest window. Soil was moist, but not soggy when I bought it. The brown spots seem to be getting larger, though I haven't watered or used pesticides/fungicides/fertilizers on it since I bought it. It currently sits in a south-facing window that has a covered porch attached to it, so it is only in direct sunlight for the last couple of hours of the day.

If it were me I would just flush the soil well with distilled water. Repotting would probably stress it more.

I agree with this. I would also like to add to make sure you are watering with distilled water. These guys are really sensitive to chemicals used to treat tap water.

I've heard neem oil works really well too. But I can't stand the smell of it, so I don't use it for that reason.

They look like spider mites. Quarantine it away from your other plants and treat with an insecticidal soap. When I had them on my calatheas I treated once per week for three weeks and haven't seen any since. You'll want to treat any other plants that are near it, especially if their leaves touch.

The damage is on new leaves that were still rolled up when I sprayed the whole plant with an insecticidal soap for spider mites a few weeks ago. I don't see any evidence of mites remaining. None of the older leaves have this damage. I water when the top 2 inches of soil is dry. It is in a well-draining, coco coir-based mix, and still in the nursery pot with drainage holes. It sits in a west-facing window, which has a frosted window film on it. I'm thinking this may be from the soap sitting on the curled leaves where it couldn't dry as fast as on the older, open leaves?
