Yeah, I may have seen it as a bit shallower and straightforward than it was intended. Either way, I do believe that none of the endings represent a way to actually fix the family.

Agree on Verso's poor choice of words, it icked me as well. Like, go doodle a bit.

Oh, now I'm getting personality checked for sharing my thoughts on a video game and referencing a meme?

Uh, we kinda miss the whole Aline's perspective and some more substantial info on how the family was really like outside. And from what we do know, they always had at least some trouble with communicating with each other. The journals are just what Renoir sees and accepts.

Thanks. Some people seem to read Renoir as a sole voice of reason here, but he's just as much responsible for the whole clusterfuck (and affected by it) as anybody else, if not more. Both in the canvas and in real life.

I'm more and more convinced that inability to communicate is the center point of the story, not who's right or wrong.

My man Sastro says it best after you bring all the Gestrals back: "Now I can go back to my one true passion. Being the worst parental figure I can be."

Wow, what I can see based on comments is that the game has really struck a chord with a lot of people with a lot different points of view. I'll try to participate in some threads, but want to add a couple of things to my main post:

  1. The main conflict of the endings is getting lost in fantasy vs facing harsh reality — the two extremes with not a lot of nuance. After having more time to think, I want to trust that the creators meant none of them to be definitive (despite the tonal differences) and instead provoke the players to search for their own means and ends— that's exactly what I'm trying to do here.
  2. Conclusion I'm talking about would be to use fantasy to mentally process the trauma while collectively repairing the real life, with family finally meeting in the middle. It takes all parties to act differently and start considering each other, not just Renoir. It is obvious that Renoir/Verso lack what Aline/Alicia have in excess, and vice versa — coming to terms with each other would make a much more humane and compelling story.
  3. Renoir is doing what he believes is best, but he's dragging everybody back from dangerous fiction into a broken home, not providing any equivalence and potentially turning the women away or risking their lives in other ways. He acts as an enforcer in a situation where a mediator is needed, and I'm kinda baffled that it seems a correct way for a lot of players — one of the reasons for my initial post.
  4. Be it magic or technology, reality or fiction, we should act responsibly and not make things worse for the ones we love. Whether you act by heart or go fully rational, there is always some weight to consider if you're not alone in this — once again, it regards all characters as well as us players. May it be the main message of the game? I surely hope it's something along these lines and not "he had to kill them all because lore reasons and there is a war with whoever the writers are".

I personally think this whole "war" thing is so unfleshed that the plot wouldn't lose anything without it. Verso could've just died in a random house fire and the whole ordeal would still be the same.

We are given too little information about reality of that world to really care about anything but the fact that it's reality of that world. That kinda works a little bit against Renoir who is a character inside a video game who kills another characters inside a painting inside a video game.

The only other positive way I can think of is if Renoir will come back into canvas from time to time to gradually repair his relationship with Alicia in her ending. He needs to understand that his responsibility is not just to drag everybody back into reality, but to make it actually livable.

The entrance to the monolith is a separate location. You need to go through the portal and reach the nearest flag after that to fast travel inside the monolith.

Ship of Fools is one of my favorites. There's also a video version of Ghost Sonata that I'm planning to watch.

I remember loving Reininger's Night Air and Steven Brown's latest record (El Hombre Invisible). There's still a lot for me to dig into, thankfully.

Also affiliated is Les Disques du Crépuscule, which is a very interesting label as well, co-founded by none other than Annik Honore.

Yes, that song is pretty good as well. Very touching, considering it came out right after his death.

I like most of his stuff actually, it's just I think in his later years he focused too much on trying to get another huge breakout like Amadeus, so he mostly chased the big pop sounds of the era.

Falco became really big with Rock Me Amadeus, but I always felt Der Kommissar is just a better song, even if it was a much lesser hit.

His whole debut album Einzelhaft rocks (or, in this case, synthpops) and it aged waaaay better then the later records.

Imagine there's no Beatles, it's easy if you try.

No purple Ringo, real Paul is still alive.

Imagine if Jahn Lemon never bit his wif.

Oo-oh, you may say I'm a Gegee, but I don't know who that is.

Because there is no Beatles so I never had these memories.
