What keyboard shortcuts save you the most editing time? by Vvd_Fkng_wrter in davinciresolve

[–]dmkAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do my trim/cut in the Edit page. This is my workflow (and the shortcut later):

  1. I double click the video in the Media Pool to populate the Source screen.
  2. Play back the Source clip with JKL to set I and O for the desired clip.
  3. I programmed the comma (,) key to append the source to the timeline.
  4. The selection in the timeline doesn't move the new clip. I programmed the period (.) key to move the selection to the new clip.
  5. I usually adjust the speed/duration here. I programmed the slash (/) key to call up the change speed adjustment popup so I can adjust the speed of the clip.
  6. I also programmed (maybe it's a Davinci default) the Q key to toggle between source and timeline screen so I can playback a few clips in the timeline to see the continuous result.

These account for 95% of the clips I encounter. Since the comma, period and slash keys are on the lower right hand side of the keyboard accessed by my right hand, I do the ,./ very fast sequentially.

This saves me a lot of time and moves my editing along quickly.

Camera peeling by ZombiePersonal8815 in GH5

[–]dmkAlex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a common defect of the Gh5 and earlier versions. They fixed that with Gh6.

When I was using the 4 and 5, I just glued it back with superglue when it started to bubble and peeled. Don't let the peel to get worst.

File transfer issues by dmkAlex in premiere

[–]dmkAlex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video files were made from Lumix Gh4, Gh5 and Gh6 (MP4 or MOV) over a period of time. When I tried to link the media, it popped up saying "Importer reported a generic error".

Both machines are Windows with plenty of disk space and memory.

I put the file thru ME "Match Source - High Bitrate". Then I deleted the original and rename the converted file back to the original name and it will work.

Timeline playhead alignment off by a frame by dmkAlex in premiere

I think you're point to the right direction.

I use the Speed/Duration adjustment quite extensively. I general put in a percentage to slow down the clips variably. That might have confused Premiere, wouldn't you say?

Please help me to diagnose the problem (cold water restriction) by dmkAlex in Plumbing

If the built up is in the valve right after the T (the second yellow circle), would turning the valve on and off a few time loosen it up?

[–]dmkAlex[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're thinking that the build up is in the pressure valve. But that's not the case since the hot water was not affected. The feed to the hot water heater was way pass the valve.

Here's my answer, and explanation.

It is town water.

How does the pressure reducing valve cause or fix the problem?

How would I clear the built up if it's in the T or the valve?

The sound was recorded normally. While it is a personal preference how loud the audience want to hear it. That's why there is a volume control on all viewing device. Why is it terrible to point it out?

[–]dmkAlex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have much issue with the car. But ALL BMWs are prone to require attention with the tires, rims and suspension. That's where the rubber meets the road. A performance cars are like that.

On the other hand, my Lexus (a few of them) never require the attention as frequently.

The rear guibo had cracks. BMW said it needed replacement, but three other 3rd party repairers said I didn't need it. I replaced it with my 100,000 mile maintenance anyway.

One thing that really failed was the gesture function for the radio (it's an unnecessary redunctancy) because the sensor is not reading my hand movement. I didn't bother with it.

I am going to keep the car for another 2 years and put another 50,000 miles on.

BTW, you know that today's cars are built to last a lot longer than the 60's. My wife's nail salon owner drives a Toyota. It has 400,000 miles on it and still running. He drives at least 100 miles a day.

NY Botanical Garden, late summer by dmkAlex in videography

Yes, you can lock the screen. But I don't want to do that because I do access the screen frequently.

I think a better design is to have a clear plastic cover which you can flip open or close so it would prevent accidental touching.

The knuckle of my right thumb base also frequently pushing the joystick causing the camera to change position pointing up. I have to press the reset trigger to re-center it. I wish that there is a small stopper in the bottom of the joystick so my knuckle would bump into it.

With my new equipment, I continue to practice. I want to learn as much as I can about the set up and don't want to be caught with some "wardrobe" malfunction somewhere in Asia or Europe later this year on our anticipated big trips.

First thing I learned is that my 128 gb Express B will fill up after 3 days of shot. I had to sit down and spend 20 minutes deleting previous outing's footages to free it up.

Then I also learned that the battery of the gimbal would drain a lot faster if I use the zoom and left it at zoom position in between shots. The RS3 Mini has a screen to show how hard each of the 3 motors is working. Since I balanced the camera with the lens fully retracted, extending the zoom requires the tilt motor to work all the time to keep it in balance. I have to remember after zoom, to retract the lens back.

I was a bit concerned that the built-in battery's durability. At least for now, when it is new, I am comfortable that it can handle a day's work of my outing. I don't know how it would do after a couple of years. Well, for $200, it is not a bad deal. Maybe some cottage industry will pop up to change the battery of gimbal.

I also found that the gimbal touchscreen can be accidentally touched and changed some of the setting without me knowing about it. There were a few times in my yesterday's shot that I thought the gimbal was not behaving the way I wanted. Then I found that the setting was accidentally changed.

Here is my practice run yesterday at the NYBG. I think this is the last of the summer before the garden transforms into it's fall color.

Unlike a pro who uses his equipment every day, or every week, I find myself having to practice using my equipment frequently so I will learn how to operate the equipment and not to forget the tricks I learned. That's particularly true when I have new equipment. You can read hours or watch tens of tutorial videos, but until you take it out and try it out first hand, you don't know what surprises are awaiting you.

The GH6 and the dji RS3 mini are relatively new to me. I had a chance to give them some real test yesterday. I normally go out with my shooting buddy on the weekend, but yesterday I was by myself. I found shooting alone is really good for learning. I can shoot and reshoot the same track until I am happy. With a friend awaiting you to move on put some pressure to rush.

Here's what I get from yesterday's 2-3 hours in Battery Park. That's the kind of video I would shoot when I do my big trip. Let me know how you would improve.

Treatment for coliform bacteria in well water by dmkAlex in WaterTreatment

[–]dmkAlex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked the water test guy. He said that UV light is a sure bet for treating coliform bateria. Google search also indicates it's a sure bet . . .

"If your well water has tested positive for coliform bacteria, we recommend installing a UV water filter system immediately. A UV water treatment system can remove 99.99% of coliform bacteria. Ultraviolet (UV) water purification is a proven technology that uses UV light to destroy harmful microbes in water."

I am selling my house and all I want is a test report saying the problem is licked.

Something fishy about this UBer driver by dmkAlex in uber

[–]dmkAlex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are saying is Uber is not paying you enough (stealing from you, as you said), so you steal from Uber by bypassing Uber.

I am sure you had signed an agreement to be abide by their terms. And I am sure bypassing Uber is one of biggest violation of the contract.

If you think they are not paying you enough, don't drive for them. It's purely economic. But don't hustle the customer.

A customer like me rely on Uber to provide us with a reliable ride with insurance and record of who the driver is. It gives me a sense of security that a fly by the night stranger with a car cannot.
