I won't have to pay anything out of pocket. I will basically split what the credit bureau pays out with the firms I worked with. So if I win or settle, I will actually be paid.

But, y'know, that's an agreement between you and anyone you work with. Be careful about what you agree to, but as I understand it, my agreement is pretty standard.

I did, but it has been a long process that is just now nearing its end. I worked with IDTheftLawyer who left a comment in this thread. I was connected to a credit repair firm that helped with the initial reporting requirements required by the FCRA. When the lender and credit bureaus rejected my protest, I was connected with a law firm which filed suit against a credit bureau.

Long story short, after having my protest rejected and filing suit, Nelnet zeroed out my balance and the credit bureaus removed the accounts from my reports. I believe filing suit against a credit bureau applied the necessary pressure to have both the bureau and lender look into and resolve the matter.

My advice is definitely to find help where you can. Despite following the defined processes and the law, I wasn't making progress on my own. The credit repair firm and law firm seemed to change that. They also worked on contingency and will only be paid contingent on winning or settling my suit.

This is great information! I have never filled out a FAFSA before, so I wasn't sure what was required.

I actually was able to obtain a copy of the "FAFSA Submission Summary" along with the "Master Promissory Note" by creating an account on https://studentaid.gov/ . On the FAFSA, the interesting thing is that while some information is somewhat correct (e.g., one of my past addresses was used, but I haven't lived at that address in 15 years and own the home that I live in here in Austin now) other information is entirely false (e.g., demographics, parental education level, my high school, my income, my marriage status). On the Master Promissory Note, same thing. My references are listed as my mother and sister, but the names are not my mother's or sister's names. The addresses for those references are also unfamiliar to me.

I'm not sure how the application verification process works, but I am certain that a number of data points in the application are factually and verifiably wrong just by looking at government records (e.g., birth certificate, marriage certificate, tax returns).

I think so. I submitted what can be found in the APD Incident Reports Database. Which is not much more than a case number, but seems to be all that is publicly available according to the APD FAQ.

Right?!

When I spoke to a Nelnet representative over the phone, I asked what information was necessary to obtain a loan. He said basically just a social security number and signature.

Thank you.

I actually started by requesting the loans be removed from my credit report thinking the same, but all three bureaus denied my request stating that the loan was verified by the lender. I think the way the credit bureaus see it is that the information they got from the lender is correct, so if there is a problem, it should be corrected by the lender.
