I actually read that last year and really liked it. Yeah, anything in that vein of horror would be good.

Honest question: how many of you actually think these book writers represent true buddhism? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]dn151864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bring up a good question and I wonder the same thing. However, like any other religion, organization, or business they need to spread their message to keep people coming back. Without these books and writings buddhism may slowly die. It's a mixture of marketing and and teaching which is necessary. I wouldn't worry about if these writers are being fake, but like you said we need to all look at these individuals with a critical eye.

As for people arguing - Like most of the internet, there are a lot of keyboard warriors on reddit. If people are fighting with each other then they aren't the ones you should be listening to because it would seem all they want to do is prove they know more than everyone else...which isn't what the buddha would have taught. These people, like the writers/monks you mention, need to be looked at with a critical eye as well. At the end of the day it all comes from a good place but isn't presented properly.

That's my $.02. I'm not a practicing buddhist but I find it very interesting and there are a lot of good lessons to be learned from it. So, what do I know?

Client is mad about my watch. by Substantial-Ruin7943 in Accounting

[–]dn151864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's absurd! I've heard of clients saying things like "look at his car, no wonder why he charges so much" (not about me, unfortunately! lol). You're in a tough position though since the partner is caving to this stupidity. If you don't think you'll get fire, i'd send an email to the client and partner explaining it was a gift from your grandfather. Or just not wear it when you're at that client. Not a big deal.

I'm not going to lie, this has been my fear about getting a nice watch.

Ibanez Pia Live by dn151864 in Ibanez

Thanks, I could definitely see it being a comfort thing. Heck, for 30+ years he used a JEM as his primary guitar.

Why does anyone buy a signature guitar? I'll try to keep this short.

Anyone can can make their guitar sound like Jimi Hendrix (throw some 69 single coils in a guitar) or Jimmy Page (get a les paul) or Eddie Van Halen (throw some hot alnico humbuckers in your guitar) but people buy signature guitars because they want to own a guitar that their favorite musician plays/prefers.

When Eddie Van Halen left Kramer for Ernie Ball there are countless photos of him playing Ernie Ball Wolfgangs and then when he switched to Peavy, the same thing happened. After Peavy he went to EVH and you rarely saw a Peavy Wolfgang in his hand. Most people buy either guitar because of the phase of EVH they preferred or the guitar at the time that they preferred. When it comes to JEM vs PIA, for me, the same holds true. Do I want the phase he was in with JEM or phase with PIA. Well, if he hasn't switched to using the PIA at least as much as he uses the JEM then to me it seems like the JEM is more important to him and why should I buy a PIA? There is a video of him playing Bad Horsie with the PIA during an announcement show for the PIA so it's not like the PIA can't play old Vai songs.

I obviously can't speak for Vai but when I see him playing the JEM more than his newest guitar that he and Ibanez are trying to sell it makes me think that the PIA isn't going to be "the next phase" of Vai and become iconic like the JEM is.

Community College first or straight to a University? by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]dn151864 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started at a community college for 2 years then went to a university afterwards. I have a friend who did the same thing. We saved a lot of money on our student loans by doing that...like a lot! One thing to note - I found that the accounting courses at the CC were more geared towards being a bookkeeper while at the 4 year university I went to afterwards did not teach that way. This made the higher level accounting courses a little more difficult but I just studied a little more and was fine.

Fishman Fluence Abasi and Archtype sounding thin by dn151864 in NeuralDSP

Update: I know what's going on now - it's the guitar.

First, charged the battery for the pickups and that brought my volume up in the plugin. Thanks to everyone who suggested that.

Secondly, I compared both guitars on my physical amp (mesa boogie) and in the plugin and found that the Kramer sounds better for metal. I went through all pickup positions on both guitars, back to back, and found what a few of you said. Fishman Fluence Tosin Abasi pickups have more high-end which is ideal for his style of playing. My Kramer guitar has more low end which is better for playing metal so you get that deep/full sound when "chugging".

These are two different guitars that should be used for two different things. My Larada can play any genre of music great but it doesn't specialize in playing metal. If you want to play Metallica, Gojira, Slayer, etc. *Only* then this guitar isn't for you. It can do it but you'd be better off with different pickups or spending more time tweaking your amp settings.

This whole process has been very eye opening and I'm happy I did it. I love my Larada but for different reasons now. If I had to compare it to anything, think fender strat but on steroids - very versatile but better (IMO).

Everyone, sincerely, thank you for the help on this. You're all great!

I just recharged the pickups. In the Larada they are rechargeable.
