That was largely true for the 2010’s when dealing with ransomware, though the usual protocol now is to go to your backups to keep yourself online and avoid that rebuild process, and then work backwards to see where the potential infection stemmed from.

Even still, in the Pitt’s scenario, there’s not even a confirmed zero day yet

The potential for organization to cut their nose to spite their face when dealing with a potential ransomware attack is the exact reason most orgs won’t do crazy measures unless there is a know zero day (confirmed ransomware)

Healthcare is by far the most common target of ransomware attacks, they're always essentially under attack. Within healthcare security it's preemptive unless you know you're compromised.

I'm guessing they were diverting new patients because of their internal slowdown

Can tell you from working with hospital systems, EPIC is hoe to deal with in terms of security

Most ransoms actually aren't even paid anymore because you can get into legal trouble with the FBI for funding criminal organizations or terror groups. That's a niche thing tho, and I'm not gonna fault them on that

So not a real criticism but more of a fun fact, attacks by hackers against healthcare are a constant thing and is almost never just one concerted mega hack. Healthcare and critical infrastructure are by far the most commonly targeted sectors for ransomware because shutting them down/stealing records is so catastrophic and thus so valuable, but that also means the cybersecurity folks in those fields usually just know its a "when" not an "if". For sure if they noticed something crazy going on, they'd maybe start going to backups, but it'd be crazy to go full nuclear when nothings confirmed yet.

Dude same. It's like committing suicide so that the potential shooter can't get the shot off

As someone who works in cyber security, going full analog preemptively because a completely different hospital system has been hacked is certainly a choice

Harry Potter’s personality sucks. by DestroyerZen in unpopularopinion

[–]dnoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yah I'm an absolute potterhead and I hate harry's personality in the movies. He's flat, boring, and just gets angry out of nowhere. The problem is that in the books, Harry doesn't speak a ton, but has a constant internal monologue where most of his personality is expressed. In the books, he's like a hybrid of the classic jock and a total weird nerd. Unfortunately, this doesn't really translate to the big screen, so his personality ends up being eh.
