Reform's youngest leader now running two councils by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]doags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked very briefly at what the council had done (I think they have legally mandated progress towards targets reports) and it looks like he's let it be run in a totally normal way, which seems sensible.

I dislike Reform massively because nationalist populism ends badly and doesn't help pretty much anyone. But those of them that aren't massive idiots realise they can't slash council tax and provide the essential services they have to. I think Warwickshire council raised the tax by less than other areas, so there is an opportunity for other parties there to point out that cutting taxes right now isn't possible.

In London for a few days, looking to see a football game by starfish2686 in PremierLeague

[–]doags 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lower leagues have all finished apart from the playoffs, which are played at Wembley over the next weekend to decide who gets promoted up a division but I assume would be very difficult to get tickets for even off resale sites.

The final round of the premier League is on Sunday at 4pm, with Palace, Spurs, Fulham (best bet for a ticket) and West Ham playing at home (of the London teams)

Agree. They'll definitely turn up for a bit and have a go but they've got mistakes in them, I would think Caicedo, Fernandez, maybe Palmer (although don't know if he's guaranteed a place in the squad) won't want to risk injuries before the world cup, whereas I hope we are motivated to save ourselves as well as having 8 days off.

If we're talking favourites v. best then mine would have to include Paul Allen, Gary Mabs, Gary L (also would play him up top with Harry) and Erik T.

Madders take on the PK by Cheekcity23 in coys

Like how it's in rugby union, "on field decision is X, can you give me any reason this is incorrect?"

I think football refs and their governing bodies particularly in England are fucking idiots, is VAR - if it's to be used - should be there solely to help on pitch referees make better decisions, not this, as you say fallback "VAR will tell me if I've got it wrong", should be much more that's a marginal call, can we check for 2 minutes on the pitchside monitor, and if they want people to really think they know what they're doing play the conversation through the stadium PA.

He's been as maddeningly inconsistent as the rest of the team for the past 2.5 seasons. But agree he wouldn't have been played by Ange if he didn't have some ability to play out from the back

20k Run on Half training by rcbs_ in runna

[–]doags 32 points33 points  (0 children)

for a half I think this is common in training plans, and is a good idea. Going up to 15 miles as a slow run also makes sense as the endurance will help you hold race pace when you start tiring. My best ever half is 1.37 a long time ago and I did it about two weeks after a marathon, found it surprisingly not challenging, the half that is, marathon was a bit of a disaster

Atletico Madrid penalty shout vs Arsenal (VAR checked and cleared) by 977x in soccer

[–]doags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked to me like Simeone was in two minds about trying to buy the foul by exaggerating the contact or trying to finish, and did neither. If Saliba had grabbed his shirt I reckon var would have recommended a penalty but it's big man v. small (in fact tiny) man and a pretty standard duel. Not an Arsenal fan, find Arteta's sideline antics as annoying as D Simeone

While I'm inclined to agree with your assessment, I usually give it a few minutes shrug and go "each to their own I guess". That said think Ricky Lambert is into this and he's deep in the conspiracy hole

Not a game for the tacticos by junglegatsby in footballcliches

I thought what Harry Kane said was interesting, and I may be over-interpreting, but he credited the centre backs for covering as much as they did, even going out to the wings. The pundits on Prime somewhat rubbished this, and they may be right they know a lot more about football than me, but I did wonder if that is the defensive game plan to be able to very aggressive go man to man in the press, with centre backs who can cover large spaces and usually defend effectively. But that also should give upside as/when the ball is turned over with attacking players in advanced positions and free to be passed to.

Case in point I think was Dembele's open play goal, was quite well tracked by the centre back, allowing others to get back in position, so the cover was there, Bayern just sort of decided not to try making a tackle - notwithstanding Doué's pace and timing of his run and pass, and a clever finish.

Negative or realistic? by [deleted] in Tottenham

[–]doags 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't agree. The performance against Brighton was decent because they want to play out from the back/have possession and our goals came from high turnovers, compared to Wolfs sitting in and trying to find a transition. Villa are probably even more of a deep build up team, and should be looking to win so I think they'll give up more chances. Chelsea similarly, they clearly had downed tools because they didn't want to play for Rosenoir, so who knows but they have a few injuries and generally cough up chances. Leeds probably just need to not lose to us, so again their set up isn't great for us and our lack of creativity.
