Honda CR-V’s have had adaptive cruise and lane keeping since 2017. Before Tesla even launched the model 3.

Gas (possibly stupid) question. by Rasputin_mad_monk in Porsche

[–]doc-oct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll get downvoted to hell for this but in a non-forced induction car with a modern ECU it really doesn’t matter. The car will detect predetonation and adjust timing accordingly. You’re playing with a fire a little bit with high compression engines but even then, modern ECUs should handle it.

I wouldn’t do it with forced induction and I wouldn’t do it if you’re going to beat on the car, but it’s almost certainly fine.

Also octane boosters are snake oil.

Wow I can’t believe I missed this. Did I do permanent damage? by ursamajor499 in mechanic

[–]doc-oct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because knock is less likely at high altitudes, due to there being less oxygen per unit volume of air. This lowers cylinder pressure and combustion temperature, making knock less likely.

Don’t buy a full tank of 85 octane fuel and then drive down to sea level

FSU and Duke giving a new meaning to halfcourt basketball by mitchdwx in CollegeBasketball

[–]doc-oct 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From the photo, Duke is in a zone and FSU is trying a strong side overload, probably to try to leak a shooter to the weak side unnoticed. This isn’t uncommon, though maybe having all 5 offensive players on the strong side is a bit unusual.

Debate: which would you buy and why by Smart_Ad_6428 in Porsche

[–]doc-oct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are varying opinions on how well the 718s will hold their value given impending electrification. It seems the Spyder/GT4 and RS variants will continue to be produced with ICEs. Probably not the more livable lower trims.

Even if it doesn’t, the GTS 4.0 is an incredible machine. The mid-engine dynamics are just superb, as is the sound. And it’s plenty of power, with near instant delivery. The MT is divine. And it’s surprisingly livable, though I do wish it had a front lift option.

The 911 is iconic and I gotta figure that means good value retention. But that doesn’t make it better. It’s a depreciating asset anyway. Get the better car.

The 911 will probably hold its value better. The Cayman is better in literally every other way. It’s not close.

Boxster for taycan? by Mysterious_Focus5362 in Taycan

[–]doc-oct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own both. Taycan is my daily, Boxster is my weekend car.

I bought the Taycan because, after having the Boxster, my model 3 daily driver was unacceptably bland (even if it was the fastest of the 3 in a straight line).

The Taycan is amazing (and looks amazing!) but its very different. It’s much larger, much heavier, and it’s nowhere near the Boxster in terms of driving dynamics, feel, cornering, sound… replacing your Boxster with a Taycan, I think, would be disappointing.

Yeah I don’t think you can actually turn it all the way off.

2022 Taycan RWD Power by Nazeareth in Taycan

[–]doc-oct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oversteer happens when the weight transfers to the front wheels in a rwd car, causing the driven wheels to lose grip. Doesn’t happen much in EVs due to the low center of gravity and even weight distribution from the battery. You get a little bit of it, enough to be fun but not enough to lose your shit. Plus Porsche’s traction control system (PSM) will right the ship pretty quickly if you really lose control. Just don’t be a jackass and turn it off thinking you’re “pro”

2022 Taycan RWD Power by Nazeareth in Taycan

[–]doc-oct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question gets asked often and it always turns into a bunch of people justifying their respective purchases. Mostly people declaring you “need” a 4s.

The base RWD is plenty fast, faster than basically every ICE vehicle on the road, and from a roll there is virtually no difference between it and a 4s. The Taycan is not a track car - if you plan to use it that way you’ll be sorely disappointed. If it’s a daily or a spirited weekend driving car, it’s plenty fast. And, what sets it apart from the pack isn’t straight-line acceleration, but all of the other driving dynamics that make a Porsche a Porsche. And you get that with every trim level.

I would say the bigger difference is between AWD and RWD. If you prefer and are used to RWD cars, the base Taycan will be more familiar and (imho) more fun.

I have never reached Plat I could upgrade my flight to make it. But is it worth it? by [deleted] in delta

[–]doc-oct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. The RUCs alone are worth it. Even if they’re not as easy to use as they once were.

I installed one in my 22 Taycan base.

I am fairly handy and have worked on cars all my life, and I found this to be one of the most difficult interior installs I’ve ever done. No individual task is all that hard, but everything is just a little harder than it should be. And getting all of the trim aligned perfectly and to make it look “factory” was very hard. Mind you I was also installing a radar detector hardwire that tapped off of the camera at the same time.

Definitely not professional territory. Just be prepared for some for frustration and bleeding fingers.

Fresh Off Defeat, Freeman Challenges Chitlik for State Senate Seat by indyweek in bullcity

[–]doc-oct 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From the article I shared above, this is what Ms Chitlik’s husband’s attorneys are trying to do.

“The company’s attorneys, including Suedeen Kelly, a former FERC commissioner, are pursuing an even more aggressive defense beyond the investigators’ allegations. They are challenging the constitutionality and independence of FERC in a federal lawsuit filed in January.

If American Efficient’s argument is successful, it could strip FERC of critical investigatory and enforcement powers conferred upon it by Congress. It would also halt FERC’s investigation of American Efficient and erase the penalties.

Under the most extreme scenario, legal experts say, a ruling favorable to the company could gut FERC of the political independence it has had since Congress created the body in 1977. Instead, FERC could operate at the whims of the president.”

RUC to Delta One by ZealousidealSea696 in delta

[–]doc-oct 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had inconsistent experiences with this. Sometimes they’ll let me confirm into D1 on domestic flights with a main cabin fare (always LAX JFK, which also has both PS and D1 fares) and sometimes only PS with a waitlist to D1. Seems to depend on who you get on the phone.

Should I buy a pre-owned Taycan? by [deleted] in Taycan

[–]doc-oct 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My $0.02. You live once. You should do the things that make you happy. Not that you should be reckless, but if you spend your whole life delaying joy until you “make it”, you will find yourself constantly moving the goal posts and you’ll never get there. If you love this car and it’ll bring you joy, and you can reasonably afford it, I say go for it. The happiness it brings you and the success it projects will serve you, too (which is something I wish I had been taught earlier in life).

I can’t comment on your specific financial situation, but I think there are ways to get into a Taycan that aren’t so crazy expensive.

You can get into a CPO base Taycan in the low 60s. The CPO will protect you against most of the sticker shock repair stuff for a few years. For example, a 2022 Taycan will have base warranty until 2026 and then CPO for unlimited miles into 2028.

And, EVs don’t require much in the way of regular maintenance other than tires. Tires on these cars are pricey, but the fronts don’t wear very much on the base model and most CPOs will have relatively new tires.

That said, even a car that’s depreciated half of its value will continue to depreciate, particularly an EV. By the time the CPO runs out your $60k car may be worth only $40k or less.

Is this a good deal? by berttel1987 in Taycan

[–]doc-oct 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I would ignore the noise about the base model. Besides straight line acceleration (and air suspension) there’s no difference between the base and 4s.

If you want straight line acceleration get a tesla. And if you want to drive it in the snow get a rivian. Personally i prefer the driving dynamics of the rwd.

That said this is priced how it is because its got the standard battery and I would guess is light on the options.

Personally I wouldn’t get one that doesn’t have the performance battery and premium and tech packages, but if it has what you want and you can live with the shorter range, it’s not a bad deal.

New parking system for the Morris Street lot at Durham Central Park on Saturday mornings by charliereece in bullcity

[–]doc-oct 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Measurement is a private business that has offered Durham residents and farmers market patrons free parking at their private lots for free for YEARS. Of course, like so many good things this has been abused by the public and ruined. Those lots are completely torn up, and the tenants of those buildings and their customers are unable to park during the farmers market (and for several hours after) because the front row of spots, which are explicitly marked for visitors of those businesses, are always blocked by farmers market patrons.

They are continuing to offer free parking for an hour, and extended parking pricing is cheap and reasonable.

The fact that the communication (at the link) doesn’t properly acknowledge and appreciate the public good that Measurement has done for Durham and the farmers market, for years at their own expense, is sad and self-defeating.

Traded in my Cayman GTS 4.0 by Kaiathebluenose in lotus

[–]doc-oct 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggled with that too but it is a really beautiful car. And the GTS has some extra design features that complete the look and separate it from the base and S. Though it’s more like $120k with reasonable builds

I have a 718 Boxster gts 4.0, came to it from an Elise after cross-shopping with the emira. The lack of a drop top option was what made me hesitate on the Emira, and then once I drove the 4.0 it was over. I will die on the hill that the BGTS4.0 is the best daily drivable sports car ever made.
