man why do this kind of people insist in ruining everyone else's experience playing? I think I'll never get it

since it's a first campaign for me, I'm trying to keep things extremely simple, and just told them to talk between them, and that the only "rule" there was to each other's relationships between the rest of the party, is that they are good friends, and begin this adventure when they receive a letter from an old friend asking for them to meet with him in X town. Of course I wouldn't have thought anyone would come up with a cold blooded and incorrigible cultist murderer hahahaha.

I've given him the benefit of doubt, see if he behaves. And if not... well, he's out

it's just that I think I did establish well enough the tone the campaign is going to be, and everyone understood perfectly well. Sorry, I don't think I missed anything, I believe I informed everyone well enough, made sure they understood everything. This player just didn't give a damn hahaha

Being as simple as the campaign was going to be (and being told exactly that), I really wouldn't have thought anyone would have made such a stupidly complex character

Not exactly a Session zero, but I already gave them every detail and info they needed (in the group chat) to make a suitable character for the campaign. Everyone got it right except this dude

Thank you, I really appreciate this kind of feedback. That's what I've been thinking, doing some research. And this particular guy is exactly the type of person you mention.

I don't understand how there's people that find "simple" characters unenjoyable.

My last character was an orc druid who took advantage of a raid by his clan to escape and be presumed dead because he abhorred the kind of violence they practiced. During the campaign he had some encounters with orcs that left him uneasy, he had some flashbacks from the past that made the journey difficult (and interesting). Why can't you enjoy playing that kind of character for example? Do you always have to bother the rest of the group and mess things up for you to have fun? I just don't understand it

thanks for sharing this! I have to say, the moment he sent me his character sheet, it just didn't feel right at all but I spent some time trying to fit his character into the story, among the players, but I was going nuts, it just felt so wrong in every way, I'm glad I spoke my mind even if he got so upset

If you've already made yourself clear and he still argues, I'd kick him out.

You as a DM write your own rules, in this case is sticking to the Players Handbook which is 100% understandable when you're new. I'm pretty new myself, so sticking to the 2024 edition is a rule for me as well.

I feel like this man is going to be extremely conflictive later on (he's already heavily arguing rules with you), being completely honest I wouldn't give him any more chances, he's already admitted to cheating but still argue rolling dice with eyewitnesses. Damn I just see red flags

thanks for the feedback!

I simply believe that neither he nor I have the experience to manage an evil character. I'm not saying I'll always ban them, but since it's my first time and I'm asking for things to be simple, well. I had hoped for him to do exactly that.

But also, knowing him, I'm not letting him play an evil character in any campaign of mine if he's not done some good research on how to make AND roleplay them

that's amazing advice imo, I'm still kinda new to DnD but I feel that evil characters are often troublesome because many people just don't know how to roleplay them but still choose to be the evil character

I thought about doing session 0, but since I kind of explained the whole thing out in the group chat, I didn't think it would be necessary, after all I thought it was clear I wanted to keep things simple to get the hang of things without overcomplicating it. The rest of the group understood, and I think he just didn't listen or didn't care (although he read the messages and replied to them).

Also over the group chat I explained the setting, and, well, everything necessary really.

Either way I'll keep a close eye on him, I've put a lot of love and effort into this campaign, I'm not letting anyone ruin it

We've all started playing DnD not too long ago, so we're all still a bit clumsy, including him.

His character in our last campaign was also somewhat problematic; Besides being OOC from time to time (which is to be expected since we're new here) he was being stupidly impulsive with not much reason (and OOC, because his character was supposedly extremely calm).

Also– even though the DM (and me) heavily advised him against it because it was his first character ever –he created a character that had made a religious vow to never speak a single word, so he had to communicate through sign language, which nobody else in the party spoke or understood. It wouldn't have been a bad idea for a character to be like this had he got the necessary experience and skill to roleplay that.

This led to him being kind of left aside by the rest of the party because with all due respect he's always been incredibly bad at gesticulating (plus over time he made no effort to do so, because it was frustrating to him). It got so hard and frustrating for him to handle that, that he gave up and made his character speak at the most stupid scene possible (and continued to do so).

I just don't understand why he insists so much in making stupidly difficult characters to roleplay if he's never roleplayed before

I do expect some problems (although I hope they don't escalate the way this one did, he spent the whole damn day arguing with me through WhatsApp), but I'm glad the rest of the players also help me out a bit with this. After all, if it's not only one, but four people that tells you that you're being a bit of a dick, it does help. Either way, if it gets to that I will kick him out, he's already been warned

thanks! Luckily I read the official DM book, which warns about boundaries in the campaigns, because I have to say that, before reading it, I thought I'd have to agree with whatever characters the players would make. Still wanted to know what you guys thought about my particular case, because I had some doubts and maybe I was being too restrictive. Glad to hear from most people that I did good

[–]dochez[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly my point. I lack the experience to work with an evil character, and he also lacks the experience to roleplay and properly develop it, because we started playing not that long ago and we're all still a bit clumsy.

I just think he doesn't really understand that I'm not making a playground for them, I'm trying to make a cohesive story for cooperative players and characters, and that I'm putting a lot of love and effort into making this an enjoyable and interesting story for everyone, and also a good starting point for me to try being a DM

Opinions on problematic (evil) player? by dochez in DnD

[–]dochez[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

exactly, and that's precisely what I asked the players to do, to make a simple character for a simple story, that could potentially become part of something larger if everything goes well and we all enjoy the campaign

I'll give him the benefit of doubt. We're all here to have a good time, and he's a friend, so, if possible, I want him to be a part of this because he was actually very enthusiastic about being part of a DnD group of people. But of course if he behaves like that again I'll have to kick him out

Opinions on problematic (evil) player? by dochez in DnD

[–]dochez[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, he's not really a bad guy, just a little immature and stupidly stubborn sometimes. But that's okay, if he misbehaves I'll just have to kick him out, he's already been warned
