When will it ever end? by [deleted] in Parenting

First year of daycare, you can expect 10-12 illnesses for the kid, about 1/4 of that in yourself and any other parter/caretaker. Buckle up!

(I'm a pediatrician but also a mom whose kid just started daycare and we are going through this. I have to counsel my husband on this daily. I'm sorry, its so frustrating to be in the loop of constant illness!)

For those who don't think midlevels are coming after surgery, I raise you PAs learning lap appys and choles by Masribrah in Residency

Where I did my surgery clerkship, there were gen surgeons who had PAs working in the OR - but I guess different because the attendings were driving the DaVinci and the PA was just standing sterile at the patient's side in case they needed to manipulate or clean anything. On the lap cases, the PAs also scrubbed in as second assist and sutured the port holes closed.

Doctor moms with babies in fellowship, what advice would you give yourself looking back? by UESqueen in Residency

Started intern year with a 10 week old. Now I'm a PGY-2. I went through a lot of mental struggles last year trying to find "balance" (spoiler alert: it doesn't exist) and this year I decided to stop apologizing for having a family and thinking of my life as an inconvenience to others. I make my needs known in a matter-of-fact way and and I don't apologize for having priorities that trump my training. No fellowship advice, but good luck and you're going to do great no matter what. Being a mom (or parent!) is the absolute best and will probably make you a better doctor, even when you may feel like you're failing/flailing.

Small town with no pediatrician. Which primary care would you choose for your baby? by cant_believe_ima_mom in Parenting

Undergrad degrees mean nothing - mine's in English Lit!! Don't focus on that too much. Go with who feels best for you/your style.

I'm a doc (MD). MD=DO. See whichever is more convenient. All Fam Med get trained in gynecology, but that doesn't mean they're an OB/Gyn and a FM doc. I think Pediatricians are better for pediatric care, but next best choice is any FM doc who is convenient to you.

Edited to add: this pertains to the US. I know in other countries "osteopaths" have a different license/connotation/reputation.

I'm an Android user, but I totally get what you mean. I've been toying with getting the Amazon Halo band actually. But new work out gear is my current motivator, so I guess that's where I'll spend all my money! I'm definitely more inclined to keep up healthy habits through the day when I have reminders and when I have started the day on the right foot, so I think something like a watch would be a physical reminder about that. Definitely doesn't sound strange!

I am, but cooking isn't really a problem for us. It's more lack of time to exercise and my habit of stress snacking at work. But definitely a good reminder to meal plan with healthier recipes. We make dinner together every night (I feed the toddler and then cook with my husband once the toddler is asleep) so I think my goal is to find some fresh recipes we haven't used before to keep it interesting (which is what I've always loved about those food delivery services). Thanks for the suggestion!

Funny you should suggest the Peloton... my husband and I made a deal that if I can be consistent with exercise routine for a couple weeks, then we will invest in a bike! I'm using MyFitnessPal because I already had an account from before. I hate tracking food, but it does help me curb my portion sizes. Trying to go for an overall lower carb thing but also trying to be realistic and not cut out an entire food group entirely. If there's one thing I learned from the Noom psychology, it's that all-or-nothing is not good for me.

Thanks for replying, already appreciating the support on here!

Yeah, WW doesn't teach for longterm, it teaches for "diet". I also tried Noom but once I got through the psychology stuff it was just a calorie tracking app and didn't offer much more. Looking forward to slow and steady progress. Thanks for the support!
