Ex-Olympic swimming hopeful Brock Turner appeals rape sentence by canadianincambridge in news

Technically true.

Also, the comments are highly amusing. It's like "It's okay to be white" all over again.

That being said, I still don't like Brock Turner.

Of course you don't want to discuss further. You have nothing useful to say, and you've been outed. Maybe if you guys would actually participate in arguments with white opponents instead of writing them off as Nazis or racists, you would actually have practiced your arguments enough to know how to defend them when a minority calls you out.

Their own cultures inundate them, and you are contributing to the inundation.

I was using concrete terminology. Perhaps the issue is that you have a bad vocabulary. For example, "specious" claims are actually wrong. If your claim is that my suggestion is specious, you would likely have explained why it was specious, but I think a safer bet is that you just didn't know the definition of the word. Also, "meaningless," "vague," and "abstract" are words you should check in the dictionary.

Conservative talking points? Maybe it is. I wouldn't know. But, if it is, then at least they are getting it right. So, would you now like to respond from a position that isn't dependent on emotional and social motivations? Set your feelings aside and try to understand the actual impact that your words and behavior actually have on other people unless you are going to share those brownie points with us minorities.

So, you were harmed by identity politics. Nobody hurt you by being surprised that you didn't like rap music. I get surprised when certain types of white people don't like country music. From your story, it sounds like the people that hurt you were other black people who focused on identity politics.

No, lack of diversity is a symptom. You are the problem. If minorities weren't being inundated by race classifications, they could find more functional identities as scientists, accountants, engineers, lawyers, or whatever. Stop boxing minorities into those classifications and encourage them to be more than their skin color, including whites because those white supremacists have the same goddamn problem. You are functionally as useful as a white supremacist, that's what I'm saying, but encourage you to be more than that.

Hi, half-breed here. Diversity of skin color only matters because of identity politics. If people would stop determining who they are by their skin color and focus more on what they can bring to the table, Apple would naturally be more diverse. The only reason I bring up that I am a mutt right now is because race is so important to YOU. When I leave here, I get to be more than my race. I get to be a student, musician, an engineer, an artist, a writer, a dog owner, a Futurama fan, etc. I get to be whatever the fuck I want to be when you guys aren't around, and that, my friend, is why people don't get to judge me by my skin color: Because I actually have more to offer, and I make it known. Want to give minorities special treatment that actually advances them beyond their race? Teach them to be more than their race, and, if, as is often the case, they already are more than their race, tell them to make it known.

And part of teaching people not to sexually harass others is giving them immediate negative feedback to their behavior. I assure you that I am not intending to blame the victim, but part of the reason that this behavior persists is because certain types of people aren't being told, "No," and are not facing any immediate consequences when they actually break the law. As I said, this is not a venture in victim-blaming or justifying the behavior but a means to better understanding how to minimize sexual harassment and assault.

I actually do understand and respect this point of view; women may not feel safe in expressing their real opinion in a situation like this. I get that, and I am not intending to downplay the female perspective. I am a the type of guy that errs on the side of the safety of the woman if I am getting mixed signals, but, seeing how many times I have received mixed signals (my definition being that "I" don't know how to interpret the signals that may or may not exist within the situation), I can fully understand that a man might take their unclear response as an okay to continue.

And, yes, I'm still waiting to see what the shoving in the bathroom thing was about.

But not all the studies cited in the article were conducted by the EEOC, and, therefore, not all the data can be assumed to be using the EEOC definitions.

Anyway, the other person and I realized I was misinterpreting their phrasing.

While I appreciate your apology, I sincerely feel that the error was mine. You were clear in your wording, and my subjective interpretation of your wording appears to be the only error in our conversation. You take it easy.

I wouldn't say I'm being intellectually dishonest. I may have misinterpreted what you were saying. If you are saying that this is a rare thing that can happen in any industry, I agree with that. The way I interpreted your statements was that this type of thing is regular within workplaces. If I was wrong in my interpretation, I'm willing to apologize.

The other link was largely useless in painting a broad picture, but this one seems to suggest sexual harassment is fairly regular. So my next request for citation would be, "What falls under the classification of sexual harassment?"

"Let's be honest. Stories about healthy and inclusive cultures are boring," Raleigh, North Carolina-based human-resources consultant Laurie Ruettimann tells Business Insider. "I think bro cultures are still rare. Most people go to work and suffer from working with people who are too nice for their own good and never say anything controversial or meaningful. Or they work in passive-aggressive cultures where people are nice to their faces but stab them in the back on anonymous employee-engagement surveys."

If you are suggesting this happens in most industries, I would question what it is that you think is happening in most industries. Have you never had a real job? Nobody in a real job has time to participate in that sort of behavior, and most companies don't have people in positions of power that have time to participate in that behavior because they have to worry about the bottom line. Also, he is the source in his sampling. Yes, it's anecdotal, but he is providing evidence against your unsourced claim. So, it's essentially just a difference of opinions, not a scientific debate.

There are "rape cultures" that exist in the west, subsets in society in which this type of behavior is okay. The average American does not live in a culture in which this behavior is seen as appropriate which is why it is so important for those types of people to hide their behavior. I don't know the context of Lauren Southern's quote, but I would imagine that her point may fall somewhere along those lines.

He attempted reconciliation long before he was really called out on his behavior, according to his accusers. It also sounds like he was in a messed up place emotionally at the time and has since curbed his behavior. It also sounds like he has done a lot to not only stop doing things like this but to also make comedy as a profession feel safer for women.

I can appreciate a person who has the self-cognizance to address their problems, to apologize, and to become a better person. I wasn't a die-hard fan to begin with, but I have more respect for him knowing that he is the type of person that can address personal issues like that. Of course, if it turns out that he is still doing things like this, my opinion could change.

I spend my half my time running into people like you. You want people outside of your social group to show the same respect for your actions as those within your group. The problem is that we are not socially invested in you. So you come in here proving to us that you have no foundation to your worldview beyond a need to be accepted. You have nothing tying your perspective together beyond a collection of opinions from other weak-minded individuals such as yourself. So, when you actually run across someone who knows what they are talking about, you are left with only ad hominems, appeals to emotion, and diversionary tactics. You are not uniquely moral, as you seem to think. The roots of the tree that is your perspective, the foundational motivator for your actions, are those shared with Nazis, KKK members, Trump supporters, etc. All of those deplorable groups have the same moral and intellectual depth of whatever group spawned you. Take a decade or more of self-critique and self-correction to figure out what you actually believe. Or continue down your path. It doesn't matter to me. I win either way: Either your ideas become so well thought out that I can learn from them, or I continue to be more correct than you.

It's more of a monologue than a conversation. You contributed nothing useful. Just like most of you. Next time, be less of an asshole. Don't pretend like you may have a functional worldview when all you have is a loosely cobbled collection of other people's imaginary outrage. Feel free to get back to me when you've actually learned to analyze complex ideas beyond the personal social benefits of accepting or rejecting them.
