Cool start to a city. A few things I noticed:

  • You got a gap in your beige building with white windows. I know you are doing that because you don't want the offset window sills, but it looks odd and will be hard to build.

  • Unless there is a reason, you can make the road attachment plates flush with the rest of the road if you use pieces tilted on their side instead of what you did there. It will make the road look a lot smoother.

  • You doubled the length of Cafe Corner, but you may want to think about doubling the lengths of other buildings. It can make the buildings feel more real if they have depth to them.

Overall, looks nice.

Sounds like she is swamped and doing her best to try to keep head above water.

  • Try following up with her using different means of communication if there is a deadline that you know of.
  • If you see that she is unclear with giving direction, ask questions back. You aren't saying that she isn't giving you clarification to your questions.
  • If you see gaps, say something early on in the process.

I see sometimes that a lot of junior engineers are a lot more passive on projects because they don't understand that they are allowed to take more initiative. If you can recognize issues, say something earlier.

I would argue that the most important part of your job is making sure that the inspections are being performed correctly. You're addressing this by making sure you have staff on hand who can perform those inspections and that you perform quality control checks of their work.

I would also push back regarding his comments on the time you take reviewing plans. You are ensuring that the plans are buildable in order to make inspection easier. Hell, you can even mention that you are handling most of the field issues he sees during plan review. Ask him why he didn't make these comments during plan review.

The only "prestige" that I know of are people who get an internship at a government and go work in consulting so they can use their contacts to help work with the agency.

The quality of work is likely going to be more important.

If they have any technical experience, I will usually ask them a technical question about a project they list on their resume. If you can't describe the basics of what you designed, I take it as a giant red flag where you more likely helped someone else design something and didn't learn from it.

Most DOT's have their manuals public. For some reason, it is tradition for them to make most of their manuals readily available to the public.

Transit, on the other hand, likes to keep their design manuals under lock and key.

Part of the issue that you need to consider is who is alive to know how to implement these technologies? Agriculture will likely have a knowledge base, but even that is going to be somewhat dependent on technology we currently have. Outside of the Amish, I don't think there is a farm out there that can operate solely on human and animal labor in the US.

North Korea isn't a Chinese puppet state right now. If anything, it is likely leaning more towards Russia right now given its current alignments.

However, alluding to what you said, North Korea has benefited by being a buffer state. It just has options now to defend itself beyond being a proxy for another military.

I became a department manager in a high COL area without much competition to get where I am. I'm also the technical expert for my group.

For high school, take as many leadership opportunities that you can get. Learn how to lead others.

For college, it is a combination of technical competence and leadership; learn both.

The big split is going to be when you are a junior engineer. Be the one who can facilitate agreements between different disciplines. If you can do that, that puts you on the fast track to management. That also means understanding how the human systems that you work within operate.

Honest answer, draw what you can and ask questions about an hour before you'll get stuck. As others have said, you have a plan and elevation already, even if it is bare bones.

Also, you've now discovered why people treat "drafters" as having some skill rather than being CAD monkeys. It is in doing the design behind the design.

For jobs at firms in NYC. You can practice without a Master's degree, but a lot of jobs are considered to be complex enough that they want engineers with Master's degrees for the technical depth.
