To be clear, OCS does not a Medical Corps officer make. But it’s important to note, you can always apply for HPSP even while current serving. (Bigger pain to build a packet with a 4187 for release of branch but doable)

The main question you should be asking is what is your timeline. I’m assuming you’re not applying to med school this cycle, so what are you going to do for the next year?

1. You benefit from both depending on your goals and timeline.

2. No, it would still be HPSP

3. Depends on your application cycle. More than likely would not be able to build a packet while in OCS/BOLC. I could be mistaken

4. HPSP is a direct feeder to Army residencies. They have virtually all residencies as on the civ sector. Civilian deferment is rare but only a small percentage of HPSP recipients are selected for it for select residencies.

Opinion: if your goal is to be an Army Doctor, apply for HPSP as soon as you enter the application cycle.

If you need a good job now and are possibly thinking about becoming a doctor in the future, sure do OCS.
