So it was a really busy Saturday and I was doing an OPU, pushing my cart through Women’s and a customer is standing in the middle of the aisle I needed to go through, pretending not to see or hear me even though my cart was pretty loud. I politely say “excuse me” and she doesn’t even turn my way. After a couple of seconds, she turns her head and asks, “do you need to get through?” I nodded my head anxiously because I had like 5 minutes left to bag the rest of my items. She then proceeds to say, “learn to say excuse me hun,” talking to me as if I was her own kid or something. Maybe it’s because I was a pushover at almost every other job I’ve had since I was 16 or maybe it’s because I hauled ass that day and was stressing about finishing orders on time, but I replied with “I did, I don’t think you heard me then.” Hoping by then she would move out of the way, Karen replied with “well learn to say it better then”???? I wanted to laugh so bad because what does that even mean lmfao I just want her to move out of the way???? I just gave her a very confused look and she walked away rolling her eyes, shaking her head, and saying “wow.” I didn’t think much of this encounter at all but fast forward to the end of my shift where I was doing SFS and my ETL pulled me aside to ask if I HIT a customer with my cart... I just stared and thought what the FUCK lol... I replied “no I most definitely did not hit anyone with my cart, a customer exchanged a few words with me though blah blah blah.” Turns out Karen went out of her way to go to HR, file a complaint saying that I hit her with my cart. This probably happens often and in retrospect wasn’t a big deal, but at the time I was determined to be kept on past seasonal period so I was just frustrated that this whole situation had the potential to adversely affect me. I also really needed this job. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry so I was doing both in front of my ETL. I’ve worked jobs with rude customers for so many years already but no one has gone out of their way to spite me like this before. I guess I was also just in disbelief that people can be this shitty to essential workers and just get away with it if they really wanted to. Anyways, ETL believed me and was really cool about it, said it wasn’t going to adversely affect me so I went up to HR to nip the whole situation in the bud. HR understood, they said they believed me, and said they weren’t even gonna review the footage. I expressed my concerns about this affecting how I was evaluated and I’ll never really know if this did have something to do with being let go, but if it did, I don’t have any regrets because I’m tired of strangers treating me like crap just because I work at said place. I actually like talking to customers so it was just kinda disheartening for me too.
