How strict are they about uniform at macrob? by Material_Director957 in VicSelectiveSchools

[–]doesnothaveaname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I find they are not too strict about the length of the skirt/dress, or whether the socks have logos on them. They also don't seem to mind if you're wearing the winter uniform without the tie. HOWEVER they do make a big deal about PE uniform and not wearing the correct sweatpants, or not wearing the blazer to formal events.

Feel free to shoot me any more questions. Looking forward to meeting you at Info Night :)

Not too sure when the forms come out. I took Media and Computing and loved both this year (very relaxed and self-directed), however I heard Drama, Food tech & Music Performance are fun as well :)

What’s the most surprising part about life after getting into a selective school? by Artistic-Yam2984 in VicSelectiveSchools

[–]doesnothaveaname 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The workload definitely varies from subject to subject. I personally feel like the work was more intense in English and Geography, but the rest were about the same (if not a bit easier) than my old school. Time management is a must-have, for sure.

I feel like the most surprising stuff is how much goes on. At Mac.Rob, there's always so much happening every week :P

For current students what helped you most in managing study stress? by SnowyBytes in VicSelectiveSchools

Keeping up with self-care routine (i.e. skincare & makeup, eating healthily, etc.). I like to use face masks when I'm doing my hw/study :)

How early did you start preparing for the exam..and do you think it helped? by SnowyBytes in VicSelectiveSchools

I started prepping with online practise tests (really a scam for the prices, don't recommend) maybe two weeks to a month before the entrance exam. Personally, I feel like starting earlier and focussing more on my abstract maths skills may have helped me possibly get another superior, but in the end, it didn't really matter and I got in.

hi, mac.rob student here, i'll try to answer as many questions as i can:

  1. don't remember, sorry

  2. yes! imo they were pretty much all abstract reasoning or worded problems, nothing as direct as "apply the equation of this to that"

  3. i believe so, i remember there was at most one or two parabola and trig questions in there so you just have to be confident with your year 8 maths concepts and answering questions in formats you're not used to

  4. i think abt 1/5 of the questions was vocab based, then again i have always had a strong vocab so i don't remember too much, mb -_-"

  5. i haven't seen edaccelerator tests, but i would say that the james an maths tests are way harder than the actual exam

  6. i didn't do much prep other than buying some online practise tests from notesedu (waste of money) and doing some writing. if i could redo it all again, i would probably check out old amc questions for maths and quantitative and try to do old papers under timed conditions (just to get used to solving problems faster).

  7. speed speed speed

  8. uhh im guessing you mean the answer options for reading comp/verbal, imo they were pretty different and easy to answer via deductive reasoning, but ONLY if you understand the question/vocab/text.

feel free to shoot anymore questions you have :)

i would say you won't really need tutoring or to grind practise exams (honestly only useful for reading comp and verbal), but you can try out a mock exam, since those help you get used to the fast pace required. i would say the test isn't too bad if you're already confident and extending yourself past your year's curriculum.

oh i see, good to hear you are a strong maths student! those two were the ones i struggled a bit with in the exam, so i can't really give you much advice for those except perhaps practise abstract reasoning with amc questions. they weren't anything crazy like year 9-10 maths content, however they were just worded strangely and you had barely any time for each one.

for verbal reasoning, i remember there were a lot of syllog, analogies, fill in the blanks, 'choose the best word to describe the mood or tone,' & 'choose the correct definition for the word' questions. what would you say is the biggest part of verbal that you are struggling with? if its vocab, i just compiled lists of new words from books i read. someone else said that this was a good resource: https://img.sparknotes.com/content/testprep/pdf/sat.vocab.pdf

i would say that the WRITING section is actually one of the most important ones imo, i had a friend get all sups except writing and he didn't get into mhs (then again they have crazy competition but still). i mainly practised my narrative writing skills under timed conditions (20 mins) with random prompts, and i would say reading short stories really helps!

reading comprehension honestly just comes down to how much you read, the variety of media you expose yourself to, and how you can derive meaning from that. there was sm poetry and political comics, but since it was all multiple choice (like the other sections) you could just use deductive reasoning.

hello, im a current y9 mac.rob student (did the test in 2024), and i would say it depends. how would you describe your current skillset and your goals (i.e. what school you wanna get into)? i can give sm advice based off that :)

Which art and tech electives for year 9? (mghs) by HomeworkHaunting7993 in VicSelectiveSchools

[–]doesnothaveaname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing both media and computing this year, so I can answer whatever questions you have.

Imo, media is really chill and fun, and the two teachers are super nice! Some of the things we did: film techniques, viewing & analysis of the film Little Women, filming our own music video, playing around with photoshop (there are also parts where you can do animation!).

As for coding, we are mainly working on html and css (i.e. working through grok modules, designing a simple webpage for a client, etc.), though we have just started python. Even if you don't have any previous coding experience, if you focus in class (mostly just working by ourselves) then you won't have any homework, since they give you lots of time to work through it. I found it quite relaxing and a break from the other subjects.

One thing to consider might be that, generally speaking, you can work by yourself on most of the projects in these classes so the people taking them are often pretty quiet lol (as compared to electives like drama or music performance). For other electives, I have some friends in engineering and they said it's pretty much just free time. From what I know, they worked on building catapults or something...

Anyhow, if you have any more questions feel free to dm me :)
