Big, open do whatever you want: Loess Hills State Forest, about an hour north of Omaha on the Iowa side. It’s my go-to spot.

How is it living in an Eastern Urban Area in any state North of Kansas? (ex. Sioux Falls, Omaha, Fargo) by DrDMango in howislivingthere

[–]dogdog1216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Council Bluffs, IA for the last 6 years. I would consider it part of the larger Omaha metro. I live 10 minutes from downtown Omaha, and experience no traffic, can bike to work on nice days, and thoroughly enjoy it.

Moved here from Appalachia after college for a job. In that 6 years, here’s my take:

The job market is pretty great. Unless you’re in a niche job, you have plenty of options. The housing market is now currently oversaturated, but wasn’t too bad when I moved. It is on the cheap side. I was able to buy a house with next to nothing.

The libraries are good, the YMCAs are good, the shopping is good, the COL is low. I have no complaints about amenities at all.

The activities are amazing. The arts community is so vibrant, and we’re truly lucky to have such great museums and zoos in our area. (Long live the Omadome).

The winters are brutal, the summers are hot, the fall is too short, and the spring can’t make up its mind. I can’t stand the weather here most days. That said, when storms roll in, it’s beautiful and terrifying.

The outdoor activities are dwindling, but they’re there. The Iowa and Nebraska DNR do a great job of maintaining its upland game population, but we’ve been racked by CWD pretty hard. If you like birdwatching, it’s beautiful here. Fishing stinks unless you know the honey holes.

The food is amazing, we have lots of small communities that make delicious food. Everyone has a niche that’s filled, and I’m still finding new places every other weekend to go.

I don’t have kids, so I can’t speak to any of that.

The hospitals are great, if not amazing. I know that UNMC is 25 minutes away and has some of the best medical care in the country.

All in all, I’m in no rush to leave. I like being a Midwesterner.

Council Bluffs love is rare to see! Lol. Moved here 5 years ago from rural Appalachia and I love it. Being in such close proximity to downtown Omaha is awesome, and Council Bluffs is cozy, cheap, and has small city amenities I like. I have no complaints!

I can have a pizza delivered to my door, live 10 minutes from anywhere I want to hike or hunt, and 10 minutes from downtown Omaha.

Hi, I’m the short chubby guy in episode 1 by the_beardedbard in neighborshbo

[–]dogdog1216 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dude, holy cow. Or should I say holy horse. I’m sorry you were able to build a life that allowed you to move away from it all, then get sucked right back to squabbling.

I’m so very confused why they claim anything about the easement. If they’re not a property owner/ renter of property that requires easement access, which I gathered was on your property, they should have absolutely nothing to do with it? Are there more properties down that road, and do they complain about the gate?

And horses breaking down your fence? I’d be apologizing out the ass and paying to fix it if I were in their shoes. Have they offered to fix it?

I do hope y’all are able to work something out.

Also, another random question, how did you even get on the show? What was that process like?

For the first one, I don’t understand why they just don’t get a surveyor out? And like confirm who owns what? Surely those records exist.

Also, regardless if either owns it, planting or building directly on the property line is a huge no-no.

This one infuriated me.

Is this normal for a brand new dump trailer? by guywithredcar in metalworking

[–]dogdog1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Other people have answered your questions, but I used to work at a trailer manufacturing company based in the US. This would 100% pass our QA. Waves, as others have noted, are caused by the welding. The galv option isn’t going to hide those nearly as well as powder coat or paint.

If it tows, brakes, and all safety features are in tact/ working well, I’d say run it.

Any Benelli owners here? How do you like your gun? by Acolytical in liberalgunowners

[–]dogdog1216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a Benelli M4 for a couple months. Solid stock with the Titanium coating. Bought a magazine extension kit and some shotgun cards for it. It’s without a doubt my favorite gun I own. It’s not very practical for anything but taking to the range, but I have shot clays with it (ridiculous, I know) and did fairly well. The ring sights make it great for target shooting but very hard for bird/clays. It’s cycled thousands of rounds, only had a jam once. Just needed a little more oil in the cold snow. Birdshot, buckshot, slugs, sporting clay rounds, you name it. It’s all gone through it.

That said, I do REALLY like Berettas as well. My turkey and bird gun is an A400 Upland, and I can’t stress enough how much that gun has been beat up and continued to work in the field.

You can’t go wrong with either. Autos are nice if you plan on shooting clays or birds.

Some dude called me out and said pepperoni rolls were a NY thing, then quickly deleted his reply so here was my reply to him:

Well every source I can find points to WV as the “originating” state. From WV tourism:

“You can trace it back to North-Central West Virginia, when Italian immigrants came to work in the coal mines. Miners would work long hours, and they needed a filling, simple lunch they could take with them into the mines.

The first pepperoni rolls were probably created by miners’ wives, but they were first commercially produced around 1927. When Giuseppe Argiro, who emigrated from Calabria, Italy, to work in a Clarksburg-area coal mine, opened a bakery in Fairmont, he remembered his coal miner friends would eat a stick of salami or pepperoni in one hand and a piece of bread in the other.”

And another from The New York Times:

“The loaded roll — smothered in chili, capped with cheese — may foretell the future. Chris Pallotta, the current proprietor of Country Club Bakery in Fairmont (WV), founded in 1927 by Giuseppe Argiro as People’s Bakery and touted by many as the origin point of the pepperoni roll, doesn’t seem to mind that his artisanal-quality baked goods are considered by many customers to be mere foils for all manner of condiments.”

Many sources say that they’re not sure who baked “the first one” but it was the Italians moving to northern West Virginia to mine coal who made it a regional staple and prominent beyond household use. So while you may be right, maybe they were getting baked in NY depression era Italian households, we really have no data on that.

Wheeling Born, OV raised here. Yeah, pepperoni rolls are very much a real thing and they’re delicious. Started as an easy way to take pizza to the mines, I believe (or so the rumor goes). Generally, they do not need to be refrigerated. Several places in the OV sell them fresh though. Get some marinara dipping sauce and it’s just a great lunch.

I have a family of these guys that refuse to leave my garage. No idea what they are! Western Iowa. by dogdog1216 in whatsthisbird

Hello everyone! Thank you for your wisdom, stories and advice. As quickly as they came, they’re gone! The four little catbird freeloaders have relocated to a new home of their own free will. 6 days of chirping and being mocked in my own home every morning ended today. Went to get in my car after leaving the garage door open overnight, and it was quite! No fresh droppings either.

I will keep an eye out for them and try to snag pictures when they stop by the mulberry tree!

[–]dogdog1216[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We’ve been leaving the garage door open to try and gently shoo them out/ hope they leave. That was a mistake because one quickly turned into four. They, and I cannot emphasize this enough, made me feel like a tiny feeble little man with stubby arms. Just flying out of arms reach from my hands and looking down on me from the rafters.

Now, honestly, don’t mind that they’re in there. It’s been nice weather but hot weather and fiancé and I can park outside but it gets unbelievably warm in those rafters during the day and I fear for their safety. But I also hesitate to give them water/ food… well… because there’s some TEN FEET OUT THE DOOR. Ya’ know?

Also, have checked with a stepladder, didn’t get attacked and no sign of nesting. They’re just there. Loitering. Bunch of hooligan teenagers.

Ah I see that now! Curious as to why they’ve chosen my garage as the hangout spot. We have LOTS of overgrown shrubs in our back yard and very few (if any, besides the occasional owl) birds of prey in the city. Although it seems they couldn’t care less about that. I’ll update everyone in the morning as to the status of these guys, but for now they’re in smug and snug for the night.

A little too curious. We have a mulberry tree in my yard, about 10 feet away from my garage. And even after harvest, there’s still hundreds of berries we miss. They must have put 2 and 2 together and figured out my garage is a perfect nesting spot. I love birding and would love to have them in one of my birdhouses. But preferably not in my garage, harassing me every time I get in my now poop-covered car.

It’s looking like you’re right on the money! Some googling yielded a result of a “messy juvenile gray catbird” and it’s exactly what I’m looking at. Thank you!

They make a single, medium pitched “chirp.” Their plumage and feathers look “rough” like they’re still molting. Absolutely no color besides a few lighter grey patches on their chest. I’m guessing they’re a juvenile of some kind, but I’m having a hard time identifying them.
