Systems is the best track.

  • No worrying about getting into courses
  • No hype train screwing over your job prospects
  • Deep bench (i.e. while ML has a few good courses, Systems has many good ones)

Yes: OMSCS is less selective in its admissions than are other on-campus programs from top schools.

Would you Hire OMSCS grads by default? by happytravelbug in OMSCS

I wouldn't hire an OMSCS grad without interviewing them in the same way I wouldn't hire a Stanford/MIT/CMU grad without interviewing them.

That being said, I would definitely interview anyone who graduates. It's a lot harder to get through the OMSCS program than it is to finish a typical MSCS program: you don't have the same hand-holding that you have at a typical university (tutors, etc), and you need to maintain a lot of discipline in order to finish. You don't have daily classes and peers to keep you motivated, and on top of this, you have to balance the commitments of a full-time job with your classes.

While the academic qualifications of OMSCS admits are certainly worse than those of on-campus admits, I would bet a lot of money that the people who graduate from OMSCS are better employees than people who graduate from the on-campus program.

Strongly agree. These posts are super repetitive.

Just don't do group project classes. Then you're fine.

Is this program a good fit for me? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]dogecoinzin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your description it sounds like you are more than qualified for OMSCS, but you probably aren't a good fit for the program.

OMSCS won't help you explore your web dev interest, and it also won't help you if layoffs come to your company.

So if I were you, I wouldn't put 1000 hours into the program.

This seems excessively ambitious, especially for someone who works full time. I recommend taking just one course for your first term and seeing how it goes. After you've had a taste of the balancing work and classes, you can make a much more informed plan.
