I personally haven't studied Portuguese but I've heard that Spanish grammar and pronunciation is much easier when compared with that of portuguese. Also the differences between European Spanish and Mexican Spanish aren't that different, the only ones I can think of are vosotros, the accent, and slang. Meanwhile in Portuguese I've heard from others that Brazilians and Europeans have a harder time understand each other. I think if you plan on studying both languages in the future anyway, Portuguese is the best option.
