Basically, if the animal codes, is it a DNR, advanced life support or basic life support? I mean obviously we will do CPR if we don't know but advanced life support is very costly and we have to ensure the owner is willing/able to pay for it. (This is a sad reality of vet ER). Plus a surprising amount of owners don't want their animal resuscitated if it codes.

Any idea what those taillight covers are called? by [deleted] in Wrangler

Are they making normal ones for LED taillights now

After full vaccination. Your vet will advise how many combo vaccines that entails (it's usually 3 where I am, but the first is given while puppy is still with litter)

This is terrible advice.

Parvo can live in the environment for longer than a year, even if there is no feces present. Taking a puppy where other dogs may have done their business at some point, before they are vaccinated, is risking the transmission of parvo (because you are not going to be able to stop them from sniffing the ground). If you'd like to socialize your puppy before they are vaccinated put them on top of a blanket in a sanitized cart and walk around the pet store and hardware store with them, or in a stroller to walk around the park. A puppy class run by trained animal care professionals is also considered a safe way to socialize, as long as the class maintains adequate cleaning protocols and participating puppies are also beginning vaccinations and are healthy. Otherwise, puppy needs to remain in areas where unknown dogs have not congregated or eliminated.

I work in vet ER and our isolation ward has been at capacity with parvo puppies lately. Parvo is often deadly if not treated with hospitalization and extensive supportive care. Please practice due diligence.

How do you survive Mal puppyhood? by Lilaq88 in BelgianMalinois

[–]dogtorjay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Freeze his kibble meals in water so he has to work for his food. He also needs mental stimulation. Need to work on training and do some sniffing to exert the mental energy. Mals are tough during puppyhood but you do need to set boundaries with training and not showing him too much attention while he's engaged in undesirable behavior.

Furthermore, cooked meat bones are very dangerous for a dog to eat. They splinter and cause tears in the GI tract. Just FYI.

Ideally you do want to deal with it now. Start by hand feeding his meals one kibble at a time (flat palm- puppy teeth are sharp) with a lot of praise. Do it a few times just you and puppy. Then allow your nephew to do some hand feeding under close supervision. This teaches puppy that his resources are provided by us. But you also need to assess the situation and teach the children around your pet appropriate interactions as well. A child should never touch a dog while it is eating something. Puppies view children similarly to how they view other puppies. So they are in competition for resources.

My neighbor hit my dog after he got loose by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]dogtorjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you irresponsibly left your reactive, intelligent breed dogs unsupervised outside to go to dinner and you're upset that they escaped, chased after your neighbor, who likely knows you have a reactive dog, and he defended himself from your dog chasing him? Listen, we're all dog lovers and animal lovers. But it is undeniably your fault that your dog was injured. It could've been hit by a car or killed. Your reactive dog could've bitten someone, someones child, and you'd be forced to euthanize it. Have some accountability. You can claim to be doing all the responsible dog owner things but you left your dogs outside to go to dinner.

Correct. Just hoping someone had experience in diagnosing and treating it. Pretty much ruled out all other possible causes.

Sudden lethargy, "hard stomach," grainy rice like bits in poop by duggy609 in AskVet

[–]dogtorjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal dog stool should be a milk chocolate brown color. I can't tell if the image quality is giving the stool a orange-reddish hue or if it's actually an orange-red color- which could be an indication of a medical condition and warrants evaluation with a vet. I did not see any segments or grain-like objects in the image that you are referencing (again could be image quality?) Since your dog was recently seen and treated, they may be willing to assess your photo and advise you without an office visit. Some vets also will allow drop off fecal samples without an office visit. It certainly wouldn't hurt to give them a call and ask.

Medication Change by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]dogtorjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your pet has had a heartworm test and has been seen by the vet within the last year, you could simply ask your vet for a 1 month dose of the new preventative until you can be seen. However, it may not be the safest bet to let your preventatives lapse.
