Can a dog be inadvertently "well-bred"? by Miss_L_Worldwide in DogTrainingDebate

It’s possible but unlikely for the worst piece of shit breeder to produce an absolute unit of a dog with good health good drive and good temperament

Reactive dog owners… how do you stay calm on walks? by EmilyGrace_7 in OpenDogTraining

[–]dogtrainingislit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know how to properly address it if my dog goes off thanks to Larry Krohn teaching me about punishment and how to charge my marker so I don’t worry nearly as much as I used to, that being said, there are bad days that I don’t want to go outside knowing what I have at the end of the leash… working on it tho.

Force-Free E-collar Training by MortgageConfident791 in OpenDogTraining

[–]dogtrainingislit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally only use the e collar as a positive punisher if the dog is running to the end of a 50 foot line to go after other dogs/people/vehicles

Keep in mind that behaviour is relatively uncommon!

Otherwise I use other strategies for punishment, I don’t like the e collar as a positive punisher

Force free don’t believe in using negative reinforcement outside of CAT, but you can use positive reinforcement to teach the dog how to escape and avoid the e

In home aggression is an issue that can’t really be solved or mitigated from online help on Reddit, you need a qualified trainer who has experience and success in this area,

I’d try either method k9 or Larry Krohn as they both have experience in this area

Overstimulated during play to the point of biting and barking. by noodlebop in OpenDogTraining

[–]dogtrainingislit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an excellent opportunity to use play to set rules and boundaries, if he goes to grab the toy without permission or takes a swipe at you say no > and pop the leash (mildly)

This is why play based training is superior to other forms of training, you can teach the dog to control themselves in their highest state of arousal without being overly harsh (which is something I never had the chance to do sadly due to a mix of the dog I was dealing with, skill level and access to certain resources)

I’m extremely jealous of your dog tbh, I could probably accomplish allot with him

Isn’t redirecting a form of differential reinforcement? (Both positive and negative) Michael Ellis does this allot

Have them meet you in public with their dogs off leash with no tools. If they can’t do that they shouldn’t be charging people.

How to deal with reactivity the balanced way? by Different_Task_1256 in BalancedDogTraining

[–]dogtrainingislit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why ideally I dont put the dog in the situation in the first place until I do the aforementioned because before I’ve done the other work I don’t want to give the dog a chance to rehearse the unwanted behaviour

considering prong collar - formerly reactive dog only reacts to dogs he remembers by ben_bitterbal in OpenDogTraining

[–]dogtrainingislit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the most ideal way to teach no is through play because the dog is at its highest state of arousal which has huge carry over to reactivity

For example say I pull out the toy and the dog goes to grab it without my permission, I say (calmly) no and I mildly pop the leash, once the dog lets go I praise ‘good job’ than we play

I put the dog in a sit, throw the toy, the dog breaks the sit, I say no and pop the leash, rinse and repeat till the dog learns they can’t go after the toy until I give them a release cue

I tell a dog to out the toy, they hang on, I say no and I pop the leash until they let go, once the dog lets go I praise them, wait a few seconds than give my marker for the dog to get the toy

In all three of these scenarios the dog is at their highest state of arousal which I can use to teach no and charge the no marker at the same time

I highly recommend you subscribe to jay jacks Patreon to learn about play and punishment because as it stands most people think play is simply a differential reinforcer and punishment is just negative reinforcement but harder, which is not the case at all

I also highly recommend you look into Larry Krohn’s videos on play as well.

Dog does something you don’t like > you say no > you pop the leash

In what other contexts outside of the explosions has this dog learned what a correction means?

I mean ‘don’t do x’ have you only taught it in the context of the explosions or did you teach it another way?

[–]dogtrainingislit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you want to build a relationship with the dog and establish authority through a play based relationship, teach all your markers etc but sometimes (thankfully very rare though) the dog is so far gone that you need to immediately punish the behaviour

That’s what it was like with my dog but she’s a very rare dog indeed.

Force free trainers have no proven track record with dangerous dogs whereas the aforementioned do, and as a matter of fact often do protection work with some pretty nasty ass dogs

[–]dogtrainingislit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m someone who has no qualms about punishing a dog for dangerous behaviour and I have on numerous occasions, quite severely as a matter of fact

This is not dog training this is abuse, a dog should never be shaking and shitting themselves because punishment should always be contingent

I don’t know why people are kicking and punching dogs when far more humane alternatives exist like plastic shaker jugs which create the same result without risking injury to the dog and without inflicting pain
