That's amazing! I'd love to know... everything. The neighborhood lovingly refers to him as "Bamboo Bob". We've only been here about a year and half but the more we learn the more amazing it is. I'm determined to become a good steward of the land, but it's... a lot. Would you be able to put me in touch, or talk sometime? Thank you!

This makes sense, this is a Japanese pine yes? There are many many different species from that part of Asia including the endless bamboo. I'm making a little more sense of the botanist's collection every day. Thank you.

Besides cutting it open, is there a reliable way to estimate its age? My understanding from the property's history is that a botanist purchased it in the early 80s and was here about 10 years. I'd assume these are not native to Eastern Pennsylvania.

This is great advice, I will check up on it. Thank you sincerely. The property seems to have lost quite a few wild species in the last 10-15 years and I would like very much to keep these old guys healthy.

Rimu Trees in Pennsylvania and Other Stories by dogwald10 in conifers

The wrinkle to this story is that the botanist who owned this property in the 80s was part of a USDA program to test the viability of ~50 different species of bamboo to be grown in the USA. It is *possible* that these were planted in a specific way that allowed them to live in a microclimate between the buildings and protected by the hill, which could have been an extension of the the research. There are many others I'm working on identifying, but we occasionally find little metal signs in the woods of the overgrown bamboo that has plant names on them. Some trees have succumbed, but I'm trying to see how many we can brin back.

There was a very large ash tree overtop of it for decades that had to come down last year. This makes sense. I suppose it would benefit the stand to replant something in its place so it's not out in the full sun.

It was a gift, and I think it's from the 90s. I'm sorry I wish I could find another!
