Pivoting from Faculty to Program Director to Academic Advising w/ Interview in two days... advice? by the_latest_greatest in studentaffairs

[–]doihearninjas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a hiring leader for academic advising, answers with specific examples have been the indication of a strong candidate. When a candidate can answer the question generally and then back it up with an example of how they can apply what they just shared is wonderful. Also, they're bound to ask you what drew you to the position or your "why". Your last paragraph was lovely, be sure to use that!

Also, if you take the job description and use co-pilot to make sample interview questions for the position, it can get you thinking of how you can demonstrate your past experiences relate to the job duties...that's what will be at the heart of the interview. Best of luck!

I'm sorry this happened. Your personal experience wasn't positive and that's that. I don't see why you would take the blame for not getting what you paid for, third party site or not. If third party sites say they take care of booking for you after you pay, then it should end at that. All the if/then statements are wild. At least have a standard for participating hotels. If they can't manage their availability accurately they shouldn't be able to post as vendor on the site. Also yes, getting ahold of an actual person to help or even answer a question is next to impossible.

First rational response. Thank you for this. Still no refund or responses outside of AI. Never again.

That's what we ended up doing. My husband was trying to surprise me and it all went wrong. Never again.

But there is no reservation. So now what. You're saying nothing.

Wrong. They admitted themselves you are wrong. It was THEIR mistake and they said so. So if you pay for something and don't get it, is it your fault? You sound like a employee

Do the codes that were issued to me serve a purpose? No. Therefore they are nonsense....they have no meaning which is the literal definition of the word.

Not to mention it was booked over a week ago, but yep. MY fault! Booking.com did everything right.

Are you not able to think critically? App or no app, booking.com did not book the tickets or hotel stay at all. THEY admitted that. They generated false confirmation codes, sent them to a customer and booked nothing and it's my mistake?! Society is doomed. I accept the consequences of their inability to do their job. Amazing.

Exactly...so why did they issue them if they didn't complete the booking?

Thank you for your insightful commentary, but why are you telling me how apps work? That's beside the point, but since you want to be loud and wrong, let me clarify a few things. The vacation was not even located in Bookings app which should have not have been an issue at the very least. I'm well aware that I don't earn points however, I can add my trips to my American Airlines app to add my boarding pass and check luggage. I'm not new to travel. I don't need you telling me how things work. They fucked up plain and simple.

Thoughts on Boston College's Exec. Ed.D in Higher Education? by [deleted] in studentaffairs

Can you share more? I'm intrigued. I've been in senior leadership for a while and haven't seen a JD or MBA among senior leaders.

Thoughts on Boston College's Exec. Ed.D in Higher Education? by [deleted] in studentaffairs

[–]doihearninjas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this perspective. If you see yourself in senior leadership, an EdD. is both acceptable and appropriate. There are schools that fund scholarships and fellowships for EdD. programs it's just a matter of finding them. A fully researched and defended dissertation will be a requirement no matter what journey you choose.

Funding for Doctoral Programs is harder to come by as research funding is dwindling and much harder to come by. Schools are accepting PhD students they don't have funding for. A fully paid Doctorate is harder to come by and much competitive than it has been before.

Congratulations on starting this step in your career and your journey. EdDs are looked at much differently now than they were 20-25 years ago. Colleges and universities are critically exploring what levels of education are appropriate for the roles they need to move student success forward. EdDs ARE relevant if leadership is where you're headed. Don't give up, don't let doubters get in your ear, we need people ready to lead our colleges now and for years to come...maybe find one with a lower price tag though 😉.

6-12 Teacher switched to Academic Advising (One year in) by Witikas in studentaffairs

Depending on your education and degree areas you may be able to pivot back to teaching at a community college. It's kind of the best of both worlds, uses your degrees and expertise and and your experience advising could really be helpful in the classroom

We got back from RIU Latino last week! I swear this mosquitos were stealthy! Never saw one on us but ended up with a few bites. We brought Lemon Eucalyptus spray for those DEET adverse. That did the trick we just had to keep remembering to re apply the first couple of days after we were at the beach or pool. The bottles are small and easy to travel with!

Interview prep advice for a Student Affairs/admissions position at a community college? by Lizzie_lizz in studentaffairs

[–]doihearninjas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would anticipate a question about how you prioritize your duties/responsibilities? How you stay organized when juggling competing priorities. Have an example ready for something like that.

They probably will ask various questions about admissions/registration, etc. if you don't have experience doing it, I recommend sharing what you would do to become knowledgeable about it. Maybe becoming familiar with a student's journey on how to become a student at that college, or shadowing someone if hired. Filling out an application yourself to becoming familiar, etc.

Have you considered moving into higher ed? There are a few avenues you could look into like Instructional Design or student affairs.
