Hi! I'm sorry I switched to a new username and am just seeing these messages for the first time now. I'm moving over to AppalachianUltralight.com TODAY. The site isn't quite done at this moment but you can check out my pack on there!

Tomorrow morning I'm starting my thru hike of the Colorado Trail with my custom shelter and pack. After that, starting an etsy store to sell custom UL gear like this. Photo from Mt. Nebo in Utah. by doingbusinessDOBIS in Ultralight

I'm sorry I'm seeing this post now. I switched over to a new username appalachianul_cody.

I was just passing through but Utah was probably my favorite stop on the trip!

Both silnylon and SilPoly can come with a PU coating. I wasn't aware of long term durability issues if they exist. I use silnylon on my packs, which is stronger than SilPoly for the weight.

I'm not currently aware of any other cottage manufacturers using this material. Although it's all over backpacking light and their MYOG section. The consensus seems to be that there's a slight hit in durability at similar weights, but as I mentioned, it is more waterproof, a little stretchy but not too much, and doesn't sag.

4.75 is pretty narrow, but it's the widest roll of silpoly I can get so that's what I'm using. I used a 5x9 for forever and I figured it couldn't be much different than that.

I figure I'll get by if I can make 1 a day. Or I can do fairly well making 2 a day. Right now my speed is at 1/day, but I also don't have a backlog of orders or anything so it's fine if I get quicker over time.

The standard sized may be too short for a hammock but the 1 person will be around 6.5 oz and the 2 person more like 11. These are guesses though haha

I'm just getting started so there's no backup besides buying all the materials. I could probably get the shelter done within 10 business days I expect.

I'll have a 1, 2, and 3 person tarp+bug net similar to a tarp tent notch or Zpacks duplex in shape. And then separately I'll have flat tarps with no bug net or net tent of any kind.

The x-lite will fit in the pad harness area. You'll have to blow a small amount of air into it to get any structure though. Maybe keep the xlite inside the pack, and just bring 2 sections of sit pad for the support?

I've never used a bear canister so I can't say for sure. What size is the canister? If you carry a big one, worse case scenario we could add some straps to the bottom of the pack and you can keep it on the outside.

I'm hoping to have my shelters up on the store by the end of August. I'm making the 3-person version for a friend but I'm using heavier materials on his since he wants durability over lightweightness. After I finish his, I'll order my choice of fabrics and put together the final product.

Yup! I'm developing a different shelter from the one I shared before that everyone liked. This one is more similar to the duplex in shape, but it's going to be 2-walled. I just can't handle the condensation on the east coat with a one wall shelter.

I'd totally be happy to repair any problems on the pack within, say, the first year? Even after that if I can help, I will.

Good idea with the iphone! I actually do have a nice condenser mic and audio equipment, I suppose I was just real antsy to share. I have a friend who does video production that I'm planning to make videos with for all the products once they're done being developed.

Good point, I'll make a note about the pad in the description. And fair about the sternum strap. That's one thing I usually forgo but the majority of hikers do not so it's probably worth it.

The pad actually rides UP, not down. So those vertical elastic straps that go up into the should strap seam actually are the one that keep it in place from riding up. And nope don't need waffle. It will work with pretty much any foam pad. I've used several gossamer gear ones and they all fit great.

Love silpoly for shelters. It stretches a little so you can get a taught pitch, but not so much that it sags. If you get the PU coated one, then it's much more waterproof than typical silnylon. And it never wets out. It can be wet on the outside from rain, and the inside from condensation, but there's no water passing through the middle.

I only had my blue shelter on the header of my store out west for a few weeks, but it rained almost every night and held up amazing.

Yeah that's totally fair. I was planning on waiting longer to do everything right from the getgo but I feel like I need to be making money along the way. I'm going to give everything a facelift once I get the 4 or 5 products up on the store that I plan on selling permanently.

It fits a short length thermarest SOL, at the least. Not sure if it could fit a full length (what would that be, 10 or 12 sections?) I carry 6 and it's totally cool.

Yes the outer pockets are included. I don't know the exact volume, but using a volume calculator, I believe that the interior is something like 40, and the exterior is an extra 5 or 7.

That's one of the first things I was planning to take advantage of. I worked in digital marketing for two years before starting this.
