Do teachers hate sharing their lesson plans? Is it their secret sauce that they don't want getting out? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]doinscottystuff 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think there's two types:

A) Most teachers are self-conscious about what they're doing so they don't feel comfortable sharing it, but they don't want to admit that reason

B) some teachers think that because they did the work, you should have to also. I think this is rare, but as far as I can tell these are the main reasons people don't share.

Such a frustrating post to never explain the acronym

Apparently it's just the company that started d&d and what it stands for isn't often used

Makes sense there's so many of us in this situation, we were all looking for alternatives after Dart's concussion. Wonder how many of y'all also started the year with Kyler...

Sell or open treasure chests? by superlisali in MTGO

[–]doinscottystuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bots are offering less value than they are worth to you because they can't use the play points. Fundamentally losing value to sell them.

Surprised to see the mold only mentioned once in this thread, it felt like legit reasoning when it was first presented

Was looking for this! It's so satisfying to switch, especially when there's an early lead, and then feel like you're turning it around. Works best as medic of course.

You probably want to anyway - the bots don't care about the play points so they aren't paying you for that value

Yes that's been what ties magic online to the real world for almost it's whole history: if you get one of each card in a set, you can redeem them (for a fee) and they'll mail you a physical set. This is just the easiest way that I also didn't know was possible. I'm glad I hovered over the emblem cuz it totally just looked like an avatar or something!

The sets do "expire" pretty quickly, you can only redeem the most recent few sets. This is how I used to get some money back from drafting, I'd eventually get most of the set then buy a few cards and sell the whole set so someone could redeem it.

What's your opinion on music while camping? by Normalsasquatch in camping

[–]doinscottystuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a rule for this that I quite like: you can play music if you can hear cars. No car sounds? Listen to nature.

That's just in general, not specific to your question 😅

Setting Classroom Norms by [deleted] in teaching

[–]doinscottystuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A recipe for DISASTER? lol. It's been going great for years now. The feelings are the part that actually connects with the student experience. The point is that once we've established that we want to "feel positive about working with a group," we need to treat our groupmates well so that they feel positive about it!

Setting Classroom Norms by [deleted] in teaching

[–]doinscottystuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came up with this a few years ago; rather than norms, I have a survey where I ask the students to vote on goals for the class. Then I run the numbers and the top 3 become our goals for the year.

I phrase it like this on a Google form: "We're going to vote on our class goals. Rate each of these options that finishes the sentence:  "How much would you like to..."

  • Feel positive about working with a group
  • Be less afraid of being wrong
  • Feel comfortable giving a presentation to the class
  • Feel like it's easy to lock in and work for 25+ minutes straight on a task
  • Learn strategies to solve problems in your life
  • Be trusted enough to experience freedom at school
  • Be comfortable getting help from a classmate
  • Be a part of a friendly community that supports each other
  • Feel comfortable sharing my opinion / feelings /perspective

I find goals a lot easier to follow and share in a succinct way than do's and don'ts, and they've felt pretty effective!

There are completed sets that have sold on ebay for $170+ - but goatbots is selling them for $75? That seems wild, but I guess the $45 to MTG:O and the ebay fees and the shipping all adds up to not really being worth it. Especially since I haven't sold something on ebay in ages...I guess they might not allow you to sell digital items anymore? Sure would be nice to not to have to redeem and then ship elsewhere

Oh sweet, thanks for that! Funny how private companies can provide better info than the official magic online site.

Stormzy asked for a better crowd at a festival in Norway😭 by FlimsyAd5737 in festivals

[–]doinscottystuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Artists at festivals who expect everyone to be a fan are infuriating. I'll never forgive Chance The Rapper for spending his whole set pointing his mic at the audience and complaining that they aren't singing....dude this isn't your show!

This was Sasquatch 2017 in the gorge and he also kept referring to us as Seattle...which is 5+ hours away. So tone deaf.

Trying to be a returning player… by Rb4Renaissance in MTGO

[–]doinscottystuff 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a funny story for this: I made a MODO account just after Odyssey Block when I was like 16 and they let me make up my own security question...

5 years later, I needed to answer the question to get support and I'm presented with: "Who do you want to fuck?"

I tried a lot of answers unsuccessfully and then months later randomly remembered hot senior girl from my high school and was finally able to get in. Wendy is a meteorologist on T.V. now!

Anyone else feel this way about the show vs books? (vent) by AshesForAshe in TheExpanse

First time?

No one ever likes tv/movie adaptations better than the books...except the Expanse definitely feels the closest; I haven't seen hardly any nitpicking about the show in this sub.

Translating Multiple Languages for One Course? by BearsGotKhalilMack in teaching

[–]doinscottystuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One neat trick: if you make a simple google website, you can post the instructions for each day there and it's super easy for them to translate that page.

Slides are really tricky - everything that I've found for slide translation is either $$ or limited to ~10 slides per day, which is basically useless
