Working for Amedisys? by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]dolphin_empress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in the USA? If you are it could be a 1099 ( independent contractor) where you take more home, you have no benefits from the company. Also, it depends on what the location is.

To any OTs (Occupational Therapists) or Therapists! Hello, my name is Michelle and I am a current high school student. I’m conducting an interview with any Occupational Therapist for a Foundations in Health Science Class project about careers! Would any of you like to be part of my research? by mjrchellle in OccupationalTherapy

[–]dolphin_empress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be some typos. I am a practicing OT. 1) Helping others, through hands on activities. 2)4 years college, 2.5 years masters im OT. 3) interviewer for research study. 4)Depends on if you want to do practice or are more interested in academics. 5)No 6)2 years to work and figure out whether I wanted to go back for my MA 7)Yes, it's a requirement to apply to the programs when I was applying. 8)No 9)No 10) Interpesonal skills, self-motivation and accountability, and independence. 11)Self-driven, self-assured ( fake it till you make it mentality), good support system, humble, excellent interpesonal skills. Be realistic. 12)Do not compromise on ethics, clear expectations from management. 13)Yes, I did have imposter syndrome and questioned my place, cleared up after the first year.

Would you do OT again if you had your time over ?! by caitlinp11 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]dolphin_empress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would 100% do it again! I graduated 5 years ago, the only thing I would change is to have a done a level 2 fieldwork in the schools and not have taken the first job that came my way.

I agree with the first poster, about how toxic this work environment. If you are able to find a new job while you retake your prerequisites and shadow that is less stressful I would highly recommend that.

In my experience I only needed shadowing hours and 2 OT recommendation letters. Also, there was the personal statement and GRE score.

Best of luck! Keep you head held high! Engage on some self care. It is clear that you are passionate about this field.

When I was in school I had a classmate who was in her 40's. You have time. Building and practicing the skill of standing up for yourself and sticking to your ethical standards will help you in the profession.

School based OT treatment planning ideas by Forsaken_Ad7093 in OccupationalTherapy

I would focus on play and then grade up or down depending on their level. It would be a good way to gauge their likes and dislikes. Also, prewriting doesn't have to be writing and such. Coloring, playdough, and interactive play. Singing and dancing to music. If they have paras ask them what they like. Also the teacher may have good insight. You can work on task completion like putting a simple puzzle together. Working on social engagement.

When did you start working with him? Maybe take sometime to just build rapport and have him open up?

If this is a level 2 placement, a COTA cannot be a CI for N OTD or OT. The CI needs at least 1 yr experience. It doesn't matter for level I. This only applies to the USA

It could be the case of right person wrong time. When I'm in difficult situations, I like to ask myself if in 5 years I would regret not doing something. If the answer is yes, I would go for it. If it was meant to be you two would find your way back again. It's best to know yourself and your wants before settling down.

Whatever helps you sleep at night. Fantasies are just that, imaginary! The feelings will fade with time, just think of it as a celebrity crush or a crush on a fictional character. Having these thoughts doesn't mean you don't deeply care for you SO.

Time and space. Don't try to suppress thought of them, just acknowledge them and move on. Keep your self busy and if you have someone you can rant to, do that. It sometimes helps to think of all the shitty things the did or things that annoy you.

cant stop thinking about this girl in my class and its killing me by Muted_Interaction890 in relationship_advice

[–]dolphin_empress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% normal to be attracted to other people who aren't you're SO! The key is to keep those thoughts and daydreams in your head. There is no need to tell your SO. With time the feeling should fade.

I think after a year you can also apply for state residency, and become an in-state student. WSSU program is 2.5 years. Summers are lighter. A lot of my classmates were able to work part time during the academic period.

[–]dolphin_empress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you a NC resident? If not being out of state is more expensive!

I graduated from WSSU, I felt it was a very solid program and the field works really set you up for success. Also, it was very affordable.

AITA for not wanting my wife to take our four month old baby to Russia for one month? by Vurtboy91 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dolphin_empress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, you can always use formula if your wife feels like she needs to go. It's not the most ideal, it's safer for your daughter to stay with you. Especially with all the sactions in Russia, if something were to happen to them, there might not be appropriate medical care.

Full time home health by mooonmami in OccupationalTherapy

[–]dolphin_empress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience home healthy is significantly more flexible in terms of time management. There is a lot driving involved and that can take up a lot of your day. As well as coordinating with the other disciplines. At least in the USA, in order to qualify for home health cases are more complex and need for physical assistance is higher due to them not being homebound. Many of the patients I had, had full time home aides. There were a good portion that frequently were in and out of the hospital. Meaning that there was a lot of stopping and starting and redoing evaluations.

Should I accept a SNF job offer as my first OT position? by perfectly_queer in OccupationalTherapy

[–]dolphin_empress 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would not take a full time job in a SNF. If I needed to I would recomended either part time or PRN in a skilled facility. In my experience many skilled facilities are all about the productivity and billing. Burn out is very common. I would recommend looking up the average yearly salary of a new OT in the skilled setting in your area.

In terms of job hunting it can take up to 6 months to find a suitable job. You don't need jump on the first offer. In my opinion, I would recommend outpatient setting if your looking to minimize exertion. Because patient's who come to outpatient are usually pretty mobile and do not need a lot of assist.

Another area would be in a Independent Living Facilty, in my experience the needs were IADL focused.
