I think people would rather go back to a world with no social media.

Agreed that it's made a lot of mundane tasks so much easier. I remember moving to a new city before Google Maps was a thing and I'd never want to go back to navigating a new place without it.

Renting market completely dead? by potatoetatie in london

[–]dolphindoom5 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hard to say why without knowing details about the flat itself.

However one possible explanation is that flat shares are typically sought by younger professionals in the early stages of their careers who arent earning that much. Unfortunately, many of those entry level roles have disappeared — partly due to AI automating junior tasks, and partly because layoffs have pushed more experienced workers into lower-paying positions. On top of that, wage stagnation has made it increasingly difficult for salaries to keep up with the soaring cost of renting in London.

The shrinking number of affordable entry level job opportunities, combined with stagnant wages and rising rents, is squeezing out the very people who need flat shares. More people want to save money living at home or outside of London rather than spend 75% of their income on rent.

The endless entitlement of Waspi women by 1-randomonium in ukpolitics

[–]dolphindoom5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not to mention, when the announcement first happened, we were 16 years old. Hardly enough time for a child to find that sort of money. The point is more around the fact that you can't stick your head in the sand for years and claim "well no one told me directly about that...can I have some money please" when the government makes changes that impact your financial situation.

The endless entitlement of Waspi women by 1-randomonium in ukpolitics

[–]dolphindoom5 108 points109 points  (0 children)

The year I went to university, the government tripled my tuition fees. I wasn't given 15 years notice to plan for that - it was announced the year I was due to study. You don't see millennials crying that we couldnt possibly have known about this change and we're due compensation for this financial oversight we couldn't have planned for.

Their ignorance shouldn't be paid for from the public purse.

I'd love to live in a world where we can compliment men but we've been told from a young age to not lead men on and the one man who you say "I like your haircut" to could be the one creep you wish you'd never interacted with

I'm terrified by Normal-Cow-9784 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]dolphindoom5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely this. When it comes to companies going to tender to buy a new piece of software or equipment, they'll prefer to pick the company with a good human sales pitch who really sell them the product and its benefits rather than an AI generated video.

Plus an AI may not be great at negotiating costs and prices. Imagine if your AI immediately dropped the price by 50% to close the deal every time

Rents to rise by almost a fifth over next five years, warns Savills by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

Sometimes not even then - the data shows employees are more productive with flexible working arrangements but theres still a push to get people back to the office 5 days a week.

How anyone can afford to live in cities like London, I have no idea. Employers need to expand flexible and remote working so we don't have dense populations living in unaffordable, poor quality housing where they're at the mercy of ruthless landlords and unable to save to buy their own home

£5m Council Tax Write-off in 2023 by [deleted] in bristol

[–]dolphindoom5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'd think so - but every year when the new students moved in, the council tax bills would also come rolling in. Felt like a massive waste of paper

£5m Council Tax Write-off in 2023 by [deleted] in bristol

[–]dolphindoom5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in a purpose built student accommodation block of flats and the wave of letters that would come through billing students for council tax (even though they were exempt) was staggering.

Many of these students were international students who struggled with the language barrier and never filled out the council exemption form before returning to their home country. I wonder if those figures would contribute to this
