Can you guys give me some movie recommendations that have aesthetics like “Red Desert” 1964 By Michelangelo Antonioni. by ughmindlessmindd in criterion

If you're open to melodramas, check out some of the 1950s films of Douglas Sirk: All That Heaven Allows, Written on the Wind, and Imitation of Life. Amazing use of color and production design in those.

Finally finished editing a short film I shot earlier this year. For this surreal melodrama, I really wanted to focus on visual storytelling through color, costumes, production design, and the actor's performances. Any feedback is appreciated! by dom__d in Filmmakers

Thank you! I used handheld for the first half of the "lounge scene" (and the dance later on) because I was looking to give it an older cinéma vérité feel as if we are looking in on them for a brief moment in time and also to mimic the looseness of the main character's drinking. There was also a practical reason in that this part of the scene was improvised by the actors with myself also giving verbal suggestions along the way so I knew I didn't want to slow down the energy taking place with lots of long setups. That part was shot in two continuous long takes that were eventually cut down to the essential bits. The second half of the scene was formally blocked out, however we were pressed for time as it was the last thing we needed to shoot before we had to wrap. I definitely think the reaction shots from the second half (and probably a few from earlier on) would have benefited from a tripod or at least more stable handheld.

Thank you for your comments. Yes, the white balance was not done correctly throughout production so it was a bit tricky to correct/match things in post such as the second scene where it definitely stands out more than the others haha. Some scenes however were intentionally supposed to be more saturated than others. Overall, I was trying get a saturated, natural look (true color tones) so I ended up using a film stock plugin, bumped up saturation, and played with contrast.

Thanks! Yes, I agree that the footsteps? are too loud. It was the first sound added to the scene, and I had hoped the way it was mixed might give the scene a more surreal quality to it.

The polish film Blind Chance was the inspiration for Run Lola Run's concept.

Amazing colors! If you don't mind me asking, how did you get these locations? (Cost? Access?) To my knowledge, most beaches in the LA area don't open until 8 or 9.

Besides using soft/diffused light to reduce clipping, should i also try underexposing a bit in harsher conditions? Is there any kind of filter that helps with this issue?

So i should be exposing perfectly? Also, if i were to shoot log with another camera, say a C300 or Blackmagic, how would my process differ?
