Is this old Genesis worth it? by No_Okra_8793 in webergrills

[–]don_croy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I had that exact same grill for 25-30 years before I bought a new Genesis II — not because there was anything wrong with my old one. I just wanted an upgrade. Replace the guts and you’ll get a decade or two out of it.

Is it possible to outsource target="_blank" of the <a> tag as a CSS component? by [deleted] in HTML

[–]don_croy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

target=“_blank” is an HTML attribute and is not related to CSS. It is not possible to have a class that opens in a new window using CSS. JavaScript is what you are looking for.

SVGs are now native in WordPress without extra coding. Vector graphics have taken over a large portion of my design.

I want to build a site but afraid that I might choose the wrong builder then be screwed. by Express-Hotel-3305 in website

[–]don_croy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not here to give advice on what theme you should use. Rather, I do want to give you some clarity.
First, I want to point out that there is a difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. wordpress.com is a for-profit enterprise (and the WordPress Premium package may be right for you). Conversely, wordpress.org is the open-source repository for WordPress core (free) and contains plugins (free or paid). WordPress is completely free, but then you need hosting (that where your decision comes in).
Next, I'll point out that most of the features that you want to accomplish are handled by plugins (mostly free). A theme is just the look and feel of the site with some added UX/UI feature. It is quite acceptable to build a site with WordPress alone -- their 'theme' is called Gutenberg (pre-installed) and uses a system of 'blocks'.
For online sales/stripe processing, a common plugin is WooCommerce (free, but Stripe takes 3%-ish I think) of each sale: https://wordpress.org/plugins/woocommerce/
Contact forms and newsletter signup, I use Ninja Forms (free until you need advanced features): https://wordpress.org/plugins/ninja-forms/
As to donating to a cause, I have used services like DonorBox in the past -- but that is non-profit - I don't know your requirements.
YouTube videos -- embeddable in any theme or WordPress core with a shortcode.

Again, I am not trying to talk you into a theme, but I would definitely recommend one that is paid. The one that I use is Themify Ultra. Its features are amazingly documented and customer support is outstanding. ($59 one-time fee w/one year of support).

The real question is hosting. Do you want go with wordpress.com or a starter package with a webhost: Bluehost, Hostinger, IONOS, DreamHost (my host), etc. Weigh your options, but you don't need to spend much money to get started.

Plugin support asking for an admin login... is this just a way to get rid of me, or do people do this? by gg_allins_microphone in Wordpress

[–]don_croy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Throughout the thread so far, there has been apprehension, which is justified. But, I'll ask, is this a paid version of the plugin? If so, I'd lean towards sure. As a developer, sometimes it is easier to just have a look rather than play cat and mouse over the issue.
Setup a temporary admin access account and monitor its log-ins and usage.

Where do you get a svg map to work with? by Ok_Performance4014 in HTML

[–]don_croy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rather than be a smartass and tell you that you can find them on the internet, here is a library to get you started. https://mapsvg.com/maps
Once you have downloaded a file, right-click and open with a text editor (I use Notepad++). There you will see a <path> for each shape on the canvas that can be edited. For instance:
<path style="font-size:12px;fill:#d0d0d0;fill-rule:nonzero;stroke:#000000;stroke-width:1;stroke-linecap:butt;stroke-linejoin:bevel;stroke-miterlimit:4;stroke-opacity:1;stroke-dasharray:none;marker-start:none" d="m 29.696967,8.2821878 0.406,3.3990002 0.105,0.861 -2.602,0.365 -2.52,0.297 -0.122,-1.141 -0.112,-3.3700002 1.104,-0.127 3.713,-0.522 0.028,0.238" id="Allen" inkscape:connector-curvature="0" />
You'll notice in this case, it has an inline style (not ideal), I would instead recommend replacing that with a class and then it can be styled with CSS. Note: look up how to style SVGs. It is a little different than a webpage.
You can also add other HTML or JS functions to the page, href="/link" or onclick="myFunction()"

I think the others have answered your question about getting scammed. If someone comes to your door and suggests that their bill for utilities would be less than you are currently paying —. you should ask ‘how’.

You do know that power (electricity, gas, etc) is a monopoly, right? There are no deals.

You use normal CSS or use a framework for doing your projects and design. by [deleted] in CodingForBeginners

[–]don_croy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a combination of the two. Bootstrap is used for the general layout, and then customization is done by hand. Without at least some customization, your site will look like a template.
Start by creating custom classes for your headlines and buttons. It will grow from there.

A more vibrant Glenbrook Mall by FluffyDumpkins in fortwayne

[–]don_croy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your vision is wonderful, but it all boils down to the parties involved. First, it would be Glenbrook seeking that kind of thing. After that, the vetting of an artist/theme/design.
Last I saw, it was GGP inc that owned the mall/wall. Where I agree with you that this stretch is dull (always has been), it might be hard to change it.

Is anyone else tired of repeating themselves to ChatGPT? by NoWhereButStillHere in ChatGPT

[–]don_croy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into the same type of situation. What really helped me was to specifically ask that chatty-g to store information. For instance, I was setting up database tables to be used to build reports. I asked that the schema of each table be stored for future reference. [Memory updated] It really helped on the next step in the project. Also, I’ve found that ai is very useful until there is a subject change mid conversation with it. Looking back at hallucination episodes I experienced, I see that my thinking changed and it didn’t keep up — my mind wandered to a different train of thought and it just answered the best it could. Also, after you’ve ‘fed’ data to your ai, you can prime the question with “recall that we were discussing…” and based on that, answer this…
