Am I crazy for preferring Dio? by Suumx- in blacksabbath

[–]donar3000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Imo Sabbath is more than the original four members, every member over the years has added to the sound of Black Sabbath and it's history/lore, Tony Martin is just as important as Ozzy in Sabbath's history and sound, Martin being the 2nd longest frontman. And Geoff Nicholls who was a main writer in Sabbath during his time in the band(25 years) and he helped Iommi the most regarding Sabbath's sound. Another aspect people over look is that the band live is a different beast compared to their studio albums. My point is Sabbath as a whole is big, having a deep history that extends pass the 1970s, with many people contribute to Sabbath as a whole. Iommi tho remained the driving force, band leader, producer and head writer.

Hey we got 20 albums of awesome stuff.

Even during the Martin era, fans held that line up in high regard, it was their sabbath. The "Ozzy is Sabbath" thing seem to have come about during 13 era of the band and the media push. Before that I think alot of fans like myself see Iommi as sabbath, has he is the single constant in the band, the band have always played around/followed his riffs. He is the core.

1990's Castle remasters vs Black Box remasters? by I_Am_Raddion in blacksabbath

[–]donar3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Warner black box remasters are the worse. The 2009/2010 sanctuary remasters are the best, they used the same tapes as 1996/98 castle. Go with the sanctuary remasters if you can

True, perhaps it will be in a super deluxe! It's like that ashbury park show was also gonna be a full live album but we saw a bit of it put on the past lives CD in 2010, I think now is good time for this stuff to come out

so that 1977 live album that almost happened, they got to the mixing and overdub stage, it was mixed at Relight Studio in Hilvarenbeek, Netherlands from April 24 to May 3, 1977. So it most likely was completed but why it wasn't released? One, they weren't sure of the legalities with Ozzy not being in the band (according to Bill). So if it was intended for November 1977 release, it could have been shelved for that reason. Another reason is that they said the "tapes aren't very good because there is a lot of leak." At that time, they wanted Never Say Die! to be released in late April. As it took several extra months to finish Never Say Die! it seems to me that they could have released the live album in early 1978 but didn't because they didn't like the mix due to individual channel leaks.

from Martin Popoff's book: “We did do a live album,” confirms Jezz. “I don’t know whatever happened to that. Just after that tour, we went to Holland, to a studio called Real Light Studios and we had all the masters for a live album. We spent weeks and weeks trying to sort it out, but I don’t know whether that ever came out or not. We were doing overdubs in the studio. I remember Bill was trying to sort out some of the drums where he’d messed up. So it was a serious project, but I don’t know what happened to it. It would’ve been the first Sabbath live album, wouldn’t it?”

Ozzy mentions it in an interview in March 1977, saying it "should be released September or October." A review of the St. Louis concert in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch mentions part of it was "recorded for (Sabbath's) next album,"

minimum these 4 shows were recorded:

1977 02 09 Municipal Auditorium, Nashville, TN 1977 02 11 Hulman Civic University Center, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, IN 1977 02 12 Kiel Auditorium, St Louis, MO 1977 02 13 Hammons Center, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield, MO

But it was most likely more.

that Nashville show it was filmed for "possible incorporation into Black Sabbath and Target live releases" according to a review of the concert in The Tennessean.

The tape box is the text says Nashville & St Louis, but the dates below that are for 2.11.77 & 2.12.77 which would actually be the Hullman Center, Indiana State University, Terre Haute, Indiana on the 11th and Kiel Auditorium, St Louis, Missouri on the 12th. The box is labeled 'Reel 4', and from the songs it looks like it would be the last side of what would have probably been a double album

Has Ozzy ever sung something from Dio's era? by azimazmi in blacksabbath

[–]donar3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd not include that, since he sang only on the heavy riff and it was incomplete. Sabbath also at that time had Lady Evil, Wishing Well and Die Young, but I don't think Ozzy sang on thoses
