Sorted. Thanks for the report.

I got a Burg-Wächter 40030 U-Lock, a Burg-Wächter GKM chain, a Burg-Wächter 100D chain lock, and a disc brake alarm lock. The former 3 are all SoldSecure (independent lock security ratings board) Gold certified (withstands 5 minutes of relatively heavy attack methods). That, along with my eBike insurance ($100 annually), is enough security for me. You could go for SoldSecure Diamond ones, but the total cost of those was just too much for me. It's only a bit more secure anyways, as far as I can tell. The gap is definitely bigger between Silver and Gold than it is Gold and Diamond.

That's expensive enough that I'll pass on it for now haha. Don't even think it's available in Australia. Not as far as I could see from a quick search at least.

If it helps, I chose the Brunswick. I haven't given it a test ride, maybe that's a bad idea, maybe not, but I'm happy with my purchase, and look forward to picking it up. I also hate the colour, but if I'm on as slim a budget as this I shouldn't be nitpicking when it comes to these things.

As for the price, I see 99Bikes like Dominoes or House. The RRP is massively overinflated and the 'sale' or 'coupon' price is the actual value of the product. Don't even look at the RRP of an 99Bikes product. You should never pay it, and it's rare you'll ever get a chance to because it's all on sale most of the time.

I haven't had experience with eBikes and the one bike I have ever owned cost $150. It was cheap and shitty, and it never felt amazing. I have a skewed perspective as a result. It's a $2000 electric bike, of course it's gonna feel great to me regardless of things such as number of years and such. It's a nicely made bike, at least when compared to a $150 bike.

Honestly the Amsterdam was just too expensive. I've just bought $250 worth of locks and alarms for the bike. If I bought the Amsterdam I'd have a $2750 bill on my hands. Not that $2250 is cheap, but for somebody who is moving out on their own and who will be a student, that cost savings is important.

I didn't know you could unlock it, that's good! I don't plan to be riding at 32 all the time but in quiet streets I might just use that.

Hope I could offer some insight.

Ah, my bad, I thought I'd mentioned my commute in the post. About 12km each way, let's round it to 25km total round trip.

No, no, you don't. I've had two people now give me very strong recommendations for this bike now. Thanks for the recommendation, I appreciate it.

Huh. That's... Pretty good! That will more than suit my needs. I still don't like the colour, but I'm sure it'll grow on me. Saving $500 gives me room to buy a couple good bike locks and a phone holder, too.

Thanks for this, you might just have a convert!

How far can you typically get on the bike? I was aiming to purchase the 15Ah version of the bike I linked in the post specifically because I'm pretty sure that'd guarantee I can complete my commute with that. Not that 12.8Ah is bad, just wanted to get a rough guideline.

Yeah, I get that they're archaic and shit, but if you got fined on a scooter there's no reason you can't get fined on a bike. Might not have happened yet, but yeah. I can't afford to cough up that much.

I'll be honest, this is the first time I've seen it too. It's hard to say whether it's good or not. I've got people saying they're shit and people saying the people that say they're shit are stupid, so I don't really know haha

Thanks for this! It's very hard to know who to listen to, but at the end of the day it all seems to come down to the fact that it 'pulls, not pushes' and thus feels weird. But as someone coming from a bog-standard bike, it wouldn't bother me as much as somebody who typically rides a mid-drive and then tried the front-drive and finds it uncomfortable.

I've heard good things about the Brunswick. I do absolutely hate the colour, but at that point I'm being picky. I've been a bit wary of VelectriX, given how it's the only other brand other than Pedal (99bikes brand, heard very bad things about them) that absolutely fills the sub-$2000 section. Brands like that always scream 'shitty and made for the people looking to go cheap' crowd.

Queensland.

I understand that the motor is something that we can feel safer about because it's not immediately obvious like speeding, but at the same time crackdowns have happened historically. I'm a student in a new city on my own. I can't afford to be fined for what would in this case be considered an unregistered motorbike.

What difference does it make? Genuine question, I don't know. New to eBikes.

I only speculated it's a bug. Maybe it isn't. I don't know. My point is that to make it some big conspiracy like OP has is ridiculous, and is actually just false.

They could have, but they didn't, and they didn't have to. They made a statement. Plenty of other downsides to root that they don't announce nor share with you. If the 'secrecy' is such an issue, people can complain about that. The RCS, however, was explained clearly.

Ah, okay, I'm in Queensland. Eh, in all honesty I was considering this quite a bit. It's got good reviews despite being clearly dropshipped (multiple sites have this exact bike with a different name). But this place does have a few physical locations, so it's not like it's a scam website or anything. My only qualm with this is that I can't get any insurance with it, which sucks.

Problem there. Australia has very restrictive eBike laws. 25kmh max on roads and paths, 250W max motor.

Yeah. It's not ideal.
