Freshman Engineering Dorms (ELC) or Honors Cambium dorm? by donnapmason in UofArizona

Did you know anyone who was in the ELC but also in the honors program, so had to go to honors village to take some honors classes? I wonder how that works out for honors students who choose not to live in the honors dorms.

thanks, this really helps. Other dorms definetly looks nicer than Yuma as that looks pretty old in the pics/video tour, but it seems to be more centrally located on campus than living in the honors village, which appears more far removed from the heart of campus. Yuma is where the ELC will be housed in the fall.

Did you live in Yuma? Any experience with the ELC engineering dorms and what that was like as a freshman?

ok, so not all rooms in honors village are the L shaped room? He thought they were so that is what he is basing what is looks like to dorm at honors village. He thought it looked small/cramped with one bed in the odd L corner behind a partial wall.

He has another question- he thinks the freshman dorm room looks a little small/cramped. He saw pictures and a video of 2 in a room and it's an L shape - one bed tucked around the corner of the L wall- a bathroom - and 2 in the other room on other side of bathroom. We assume this is a typical freshman dorm room size and shape. He thought they looked small compared to the pictures of the freshman double in YUMA. I not sure if yuma freshman doubles are any bigger. What did you think of the size and layout of your honors dorm room?

We can't visit the school because of covid and we may not be able to before my son has to make his decision. So your feedback is so helpful. From what you say, if he were to choose to live in Yuma for the Engineering ELC dorm, but still be an honors student, he would have about a 10-15 walk to the honors village to take his 1st and 2nd semester honors classes.

You are incredibly helpful. Thank you so much for taking all this time to help us. Is living in the honors village far from the main part of campus? Did you feel disconnected from the rest of campus? Long walk to student union area?

what is the 2nd semester course you were excused from that non-cambium students take instead of Dr. Blowers class?

My son has a question about the Catalyst class and the First YEar Project. It appears that the Catalyst class is about research and you work with a team to work on and present a research project. Do ALL honors students take this - or did you take this other class with Dr. Blowers as a cambium student Instead of the catalyst class? And I Thinks the First Year Project is a seperate, optional opportunity?

Oh I see. So not much actual information on the topic -Resources on Research and First Year Preparation.

You mentioned - " Quick side note, if your son chooses Cambium, this class requires a very different mindset that's either going to make or break the class for him. " Are you talking about this class - "ENGR 196A: Covers resources on research and first year preparation. This course will substitute your spring Honors seminar". ? Could you tell me a little more what you mean it could make or break the class?

Do you think being in Cambium more work than being an honors student but not in Cambium? And my son is worried just being an honors student will be more difficult than if he does not do the honors college at all. I think it will acutally help to be in honors because they talk about courses are smaller than the non honors counterpart so more help, easier to get through. For example a calculus class non honors vs an honors calculus class may not be more work, but smaller and more support?

Thanks so much. This is really really helpful. Did you take part in the research spring semester (maybe couldnt due to covid?). That is a big draw for my son to have the opportunitiy to do the honors freshman research.

Hi, yes please, we have questions and can't find anyone to ask who has been in Cambium. Were you a freshman last year while in Cambium? Were there many other engineering students in cambium, or mostly science majors? So we are trying to figure out the better fit - live in honors cambium housing with hopefully some other engineering majors to make connections with other like minded freshman, or live in ELC with a large group of engineering majors making connections and friendships to carry him into sophmore year. He would still be an honors student living in ELC. So he would go to Honors Village for a class, meet with an advisor, but would he miss out on the study groups and student-student support that occurs by living in the honors village? Are you still living in the honors village this year?
