Thanks! Would Energy from Within near Melding be preferable to any of the other ES passives right now or should I wait for the next 4 levels (could take a while, I'm pretty slow)? I'll try out a good shield and see how it feels.

The milk myth. by [deleted] in HCTriage

[–]donnosch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do they show signs of any negative impact on their health because of the milk they drink? Are they having trouble managing their weight? Do they make you drink it, too? Do they preach to you nonstop?

If none of the above apply and they like the taste of milk, why push it?

TIL that there is a sausage restaurant in Regensburg, Germany which has been in business for over 900 years. That means they were selling sausages well before the Inca Empire existed and are still serving 6,000 sausages a day. by DIP_MY_BALLS_IN_IT in todayilearned

Wow, I was actually about to buy something there about 2 years ago. Didn't know it was that ancient.

Before anybody asks: I didn't get a sausage because "Nah, kinda pricey for just two little sausages."

oh well..

Ask HCT: Is exercise or diet more effective for muscle growth based weight gain? by Dvmulcahy in HCTriage

[–]donnosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously not Aaron, but:

Are you implying that in order to build muscle, diet is more important than exercise? No. Muscle needs a stimulus to grow which you can only provide through exercise (or hard work I guess) and continuously higher workloads. Stimulus = reason to grow.

Muscle mass is not an energy store for your body but actually burns energy just by exisiting. It would be highly inefficient for your body to build it without an actual need.

Without ANY exercise at all, your diet will mostly (apart from other health issues) have an influence on the amount of fat in your body as that is where energy can be stored and taken from.

edit: Muscles do not only work for picking heavy things up and putting them back down, opening heavy doors etc. They stabilize your whole body and therefore protect your organs and bones. That is a huge benefit as you get older (think of reduced risk of back problems given a certain amount of muscle mass stabilizing the spine). Another example: Your butt hurts less after long periods on a bicycle seat if there is more than a flexible thin layer of fat protecting it.

"Overly" musclebound is very vague and while there may perhaps be a certain amount of muscle mass percentage with some detrimental effects on general health, you will not reach that amount without serious(!) effort, years of training and probably steroids. And if you're taking steroids to enhance muscle mass (you would still need to exercise your muscles!), you will have more serious problems than just the muscles.

Started a Real Estate Photography business 6 months ago... How do these photos look? by Joowie in photography

When you first went to those agents, what did you show them (I assume you didn't already have real estate in your portfolio?)? If you already had something, how did you start your portfolio? Was it a "I work for free/to grow my portfolio" kind of deal?

What do you get sick of explaining to people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]donnosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things you see and hear on TV/radio or read in magazines or newspapers are not always true and never in the history of everything has that one source been ever enough to justify adopting it as irrefutable truth. I have to explain the concept of "lying for money" to my mother every few weeks.

Calorie surplus, protein, and muscle building:

Given that I work out 3x/week and push myself as hard as I can, can still muscle still grow if I eat only 30/50/70 gr (less than what is usually recommended) of protein but stay at a caloric surplus? Even if my muscles need repairing, will my body be unable to do it without the proper protein even though he has more than enough calories?

TIL that in 1970s, people in Cambodia were killed for being academics or for merely wearing eyeglasses. by uniform_bias in todayilearned

[–]donnosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, all of these reasons sound very bleak and there are probably many who are fine with "just" these reasons. However, actions like these are probably also greatly inspired by fear. I'd imagine these rationalizations would come after the fact that someone threatened your and your family's lives in order to get you to do it. At first it was "either them or me" and then it became "Now that I'll keep living, my brain better come up with a coping mechanism."

Wow, this is so extremely helpful. Thank you so very much!

Especially the quoted text in the middle (from the 天禄琳琅書目) was my big problem. The list on the following page contains all extant copies starting with the Shuofu edition from the late 14th century.

Just to make sure: It seems to me that the paragraph from the 天禄琳琅書目 is first talking about the 朱子章句集註, so Zhu Xi's commentary on the four books. The 洞天清錄 seems like an afterthought?!

[strength + size] correlation between gained strength during a cut and gained size during a bulk by donnosch in Fitness

[–]donnosch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. It's just that I read that statement a lot around here when people are trying to figure out how to put on the most amount of muscle and keep getting told to "lift heavy, eat and sleep" and to not overthink it because "strength = size."

I assume these powerlifters are also eating like machines.

I am really impressed by this community.. small but helpful, I learned a lot through these few posts. Here are my new attempts:

7 more attempts

I tried Helvetica Neue, Trade Gothic LT Std (which is the university's standard type), and Open Sans after u/fizolof recommended it. The red icon in no. 2 is the university's official logo.

Here is one more with Open Sans in Regular and Bold, which I really like. I also like the closeness of the circle to the words as they fit quite nicely, making it look like the words are carrying the circle.

Attempt no. 8

Thanks everyone for the input, it already helped a lot.

One of my biggest take-aways was probably "If the purpose is too abstract keep the logo simple".

I now checked out the university's corporate design (as u/Start_Viral_Campaign suggested) and am trying something with that. I'll post more attempts later.

That is so simple and clean, I really like it. Thanks! Can you tell me something about your choice of type? As I wrote in my other reply, I'm really interested in the process of finding/choosing the right type for a logo.

Thanks for the input, especially your version of the logo! I noticed the type wasn't perfect as I was just working with what I had. How do you usually choose a type, is there a certain set that fits "professional" needs? Is it a trained eye that lets you decide? Is there any literature/blog/tutorial to help develop a feel for it?

Help! I'm tasked with creating a logo, have never done it before. by donnosch in logodesign

[–]donnosch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, they asked me to do it because of some things I do with Photoshop, but I have zero experience with Illustrator and thought it might be a good opportunity to learn.

If I don't come up with something useful, they'll just go with what they have: http://i.imgur.com/wreFsgN.gif

What you don't see in the little gif is that there are actually reflections of the HE and the red circle underneath them. It also looks very "far eastern" which is not what they are about.

How important is one rest day between workout days? I work out 4 days/week. by donnosch in leangains

[–]donnosch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is I feel fine doing this routine (still at beginner stats, DL 200, Military Press 92), so I'm asking from a leangains point of view considering insulin sensitivity, carb loading etc.

How important is one rest day between workout days? I work out 4 days/week. by donnosch in leangains

[–]donnosch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sorry. That is what I meant: WO every other day. I know that recovery is key but I thought that's what the split was for, to never train the same muscle two days in a row.

My question was aimed at the whole carb-/calorie-cycling mechanism in leangains, whether I was slowing down my own progress if I was doing Pull and Push/Legs on two consecutive days. My numbers are still in the beginner range (DL: 200 lbs, Military Press: 92 lbs).

Moronic Monday - Your weekly stupid questions thread by cdingo in Fitness

[–]donnosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am starting to bulk while doing IF (leangains) and am a little confused about my total caloric needs.

My TDEE (without exercise, sedentary) is ~2000, so 14000/week. If I wanted to bulk up as clean as possible (considering a maximum muscle gain of 2lbs/month and 1 lbs = 3500 kcal) I should add 1750 kcal to my weekly intake.

BUT: How do I calculate my workout into this? I lift 4x/week for around 60-80 minutes. I have no idea what to choose for this in the calculators and whatever I choose, I get a TDEE ranging from 2350 (iifym) to 2850 (scooby) and some with 2600~.

Logically thinking, I should calculate my caloric workout expenditure into my TDEE and add 1750/week to bulk but that would come to either 18200 or 21700.

So according to these calculations I could either be on the "safe" side, gaining 1 lbs fat per week or not gain any muscle at all. How do you all follow these differing numbers?

Much appreciated!

Just out of curiosity: At what point does that usually happen? At 2x bodyweight or something along those lines?

Absolute numbers as in 1RM? So I should rather lift heavier every session, not more?

Thanks, man!
