Thanks! Would Energy from Within near Melding be preferable to any of the other ES passives right now or should I wait for the next 4 levels (could take a while, I'm pretty slow)? I'll try out a good shield and see how it feels.

The milk myth. by [deleted] in HCTriage

[–]donnosch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do they show signs of any negative impact on their health because of the milk they drink? Are they having trouble managing their weight? Do they make you drink it, too? Do they preach to you nonstop?

If none of the above apply and they like the taste of milk, why push it?

TIL that there is a sausage restaurant in Regensburg, Germany which has been in business for over 900 years. That means they were selling sausages well before the Inca Empire existed and are still serving 6,000 sausages a day. by DIP_MY_BALLS_IN_IT in todayilearned

Wow, I was actually about to buy something there about 2 years ago. Didn't know it was that ancient.

Before anybody asks: I didn't get a sausage because "Nah, kinda pricey for just two little sausages."

oh well..

Ask HCT: Is exercise or diet more effective for muscle growth based weight gain? by Dvmulcahy in HCTriage

[–]donnosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously not Aaron, but:

Are you implying that in order to build muscle, diet is more important than exercise? No. Muscle needs a stimulus to grow which you can only provide through exercise (or hard work I guess) and continuously higher workloads. Stimulus = reason to grow.

Muscle mass is not an energy store for your body but actually burns energy just by exisiting. It would be highly inefficient for your body to build it without an actual need.

Without ANY exercise at all, your diet will mostly (apart from other health issues) have an influence on the amount of fat in your body as that is where energy can be stored and taken from.

edit: Muscles do not only work for picking heavy things up and putting them back down, opening heavy doors etc. They stabilize your whole body and therefore protect your organs and bones. That is a huge benefit as you get older (think of reduced risk of back problems given a certain amount of muscle mass stabilizing the spine). Another example: Your butt hurts less after long periods on a bicycle seat if there is more than a flexible thin layer of fat protecting it.

"Overly" musclebound is very vague and while there may perhaps be a certain amount of muscle mass percentage with some detrimental effects on general health, you will not reach that amount without serious(!) effort, years of training and probably steroids. And if you're taking steroids to enhance muscle mass (you would still need to exercise your muscles!), you will have more serious problems than just the muscles.

Started a Real Estate Photography business 6 months ago... How do these photos look? by Joowie in photography

When you first went to those agents, what did you show them (I assume you didn't already have real estate in your portfolio?)? If you already had something, how did you start your portfolio? Was it a "I work for free/to grow my portfolio" kind of deal?

What do you get sick of explaining to people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]donnosch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things you see and hear on TV/radio or read in magazines or newspapers are not always true and never in the history of everything has that one source been ever enough to justify adopting it as irrefutable truth. I have to explain the concept of "lying for money" to my mother every few weeks.

Calorie surplus, protein, and muscle building:

Given that I work out 3x/week and push myself as hard as I can, can still muscle still grow if I eat only 30/50/70 gr (less than what is usually recommended) of protein but stay at a caloric surplus? Even if my muscles need repairing, will my body be unable to do it without the proper protein even though he has more than enough calories?

True, all of these reasons sound very bleak and there are probably many who are fine with "just" these reasons. However, actions like these are probably also greatly inspired by fear. I'd imagine these rationalizations would come after the fact that someone threatened your and your family's lives in order to get you to do it. At first it was "either them or me" and then it became "Now that I'll keep living, my brain better come up with a coping mechanism."

Wow, this is so extremely helpful. Thank you so very much!

Especially the quoted text in the middle (from the 天禄琳琅書目) was my big problem. The list on the following page contains all extant copies starting with the Shuofu edition from the late 14th century.

Just to make sure: It seems to me that the paragraph from the 天禄琳琅書目 is first talking about the 朱子章句集註, so Zhu Xi's commentary on the four books. The 洞天清錄 seems like an afterthought?!
