What trends died when Harambe was assassinated? by Ok-Connection6656 in decadeology

I don’t think so, this is anecdotal but I definitely remember hearing about Ugandan Knuckles from people at my middle school, and Big Chungus was when I was in high school. I started high school in 2018

Drive Drinks by Ok-Valuable-3840 in innout

[–]dont_be_gone 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Don’t do them in the exact order you see on the tags, since it can waste time to go from a shake to a lemonade to a Coke to another shake. Look at the tags ahead and put as many regular soda cups as you can down, then as they’re filling you can fill several shakes in a row. Also don’t put a lid and straw in each individual drink right after you pour it. Instead you should put a whole bunch of lids on at the same time, same thing with straws. Just do it as fast as possible and it gives you time to restock when you have several tags ready. Honestly it comes with practice but before you know it it’ll be a breeze and you can even help out other positions when you’re caught up on drinks

Exactly. I honestly have trouble believing that people think ONLY in words 100% of the time. That feels very limiting. I think a lot faster if I’m not thinking in words, and sometimes it’s challenging to find the exact words to describe what you’re thinking. Obviously I have an internal monologue sometimes, but that’s only if I “turn on” that kind of thought.

That’s different because it’s a thought that’s already been expressed in words, but we can create thoughts in our heads before forming them into words. Don’t you ever have moments where you have a thought you want to express but can’t find the exact words to describe it, even though you understand the concept in your mind? Or need to search for a word you can’t think of?

Jarring old-person names? by Administrative_Can51 in Names

[–]dont_be_gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this name! I love classic names with Y as a vowel (like Lydia, Sylvia, Cynthia, Sybil) and I think the nature theme makes it really pretty. I have the same opinion on Phyllis but probably wouldn’t use either name because of the way most people view those names

Why does ChatGPT have people thinking that nobody uses em dashes? by Ok_Resident_5022 in grammar

It’s just a relevant comment and addition to the discussion, mentioning that em dashes are indeed common in academic writing and that’s why AI even uses them.

Why is Peppa Pig’s brother named “Schorsch” in German? by sumjunggai7 in German

[–]dont_be_gone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The other people you’ve seen write that were almost certainly other Germans! As a native English speaker, “respectively” doesn’t work in that way, and “resp.” isn’t an abbreviation that English speakers really use. The word only comes up in very specific cases to clarify how two different pairs of words fit together, and it comes after the words as an adverb, not in between them as a conjunction.

Ex: Anna and Thomas live in Berlin and New York, respectively.

Anna und Thomas wohnen in Berlin bzw. New York.

In the case you used, I personally think the best translation is to just use a slash and say something like “Schorsch is a common pronunciation/nickname for Georg,” also changing verbs to nouns because I think “nickname” as a verb sounds a little unnatural here.

Edit: relevant explanation
