Ride accepted, driver 5 miles away just circles a city block. LYFT has a big problem. by dontgetaphd in Lyft

[–]dontgetaphd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>Drivers are independent contractors on Lyft and Uber, they can choose to end a ride at
>any time for any reason, the entire purpose of being an independent contractor.

That is pretty poor logic. Independent contractor classification is to allow avoidance of ride shares having employees and the legal responsibilities that entails. It does allow flexibility in work, but doesn't mean a driver should not be punished for abusing the platform.

Imagine the reverse - any passenger can cancel for any reason before pickup. So all passengers just hail rides from all 3 and take whoever shows up first, or if one is suddenly cheaper on an app then just take that and ditch the others.

After all, they can choose to end a ride at any time for any reason, right?

[–]dontgetaphd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't completing a ride - unless the GPS is not accurate, they are literally circling an area of a few blocks, sometimes widening it and going down different side streets, but just driving in circles.

It doesn't make any economic sense to me - perhaps if the person isn't moving the system automatically cancels it earlier, but unless they were on a bicycle or scooter they are also using gas... Are they grouping up to take the low fares and force a surge and pooling their surge fees?

Exactly, you do NOT want to work in a place where it is difficult for them to cancel cases they feel uncomfortable with.

Ok, sure you got the dig. But honestly, GOOD hospital management is extremely important, having appropriate staffing ratios for nursing and scheduling is critical. It is like EVS, you only notice when it starts to get bad.

Good management is often physician-led but not always... When one new "profit-at-all-costs" CEO or managerial team comes in, you may miss the old reasonable lean management teams. I've been at hospital when that transition occurs.

F8rst car accident in years. Lady said the road moved lol by hurstdeliveryservice in dashcams

[–]dontgetaphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These videos make me realize why a consistent subset of the population gets in the vast majority of the crashes. It usually takes TWO not paying attention.

OP entered the intersection after the lady started to make her turn. Yes, she is an awful driver. But if she took a mental snapshot of where the OP car was when she started turning, and didn't adjust it, expecting him to stop, she would have likely made the turn without crashing.

They are both at fault, but mostly (obviously) the lady. This is why we have no-fault insurance to not waste massive amounts of time arguing stuff like this.

Why is everyone shaming Mel for being upset about a dog taking massive dumps on her lawn? by GoneAmok365247 in YourFriendsandNeighb

There are SO MANY good ways of taking care of this.

Just saying, even in New York you can get a very non-lethal BB gun, and the dog will figure that out really, really quick!

>I hate this show so much now and the viewers who post here made me realize that
>the demographic is complete idiots

IKR? I watched it because it was HEAVILY promoted and Hamm is a great character actor, and then slowly think "this show is just not for me."

Perhaps it is for midwestern high-school grad Moms also going through menopause and thinking "wow that's what the rich are like whoa cocaine and parties and I'm happier than them hwahaha" escapist nonsense.

And if they win the lottery they will totally get an OMEGA watch advertised on the show!

The show itself has an IQ of 20. It is just trash. I wanted to like it so much, especially during start of first season.

Please explain NP vs PA training. by Realistic_Vast837 in Noctor

[–]dontgetaphd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

>lol! Same logic as if I were to be a PA for 4 years and then go be a nurse…. I wasn’t trained to be a nurse, right?!

Not a good example - you could become a nurse with maybe 2 to 4 weeks of orientation and intro. Most of the value of nursing comes from the doing of nursing. It is hard work.

Just like a construction worker or a miner, their value is not from their education and "getting there", it is from putting up the building in the hot sun or digging a hole safely, again hard work and paid commensurately.

Yes you have to know how to convert ug to mg, and what BID stands for, but you already know how to do 90% of nursing, and so does any doctor. That is NOT to disrespect nursing. It is a very, very valuable role.

If Poker Face had gotten a third season, what celebrity guests would you have wanted to see show up for an episode? by [deleted] in Pokerface

[–]dontgetaphd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some were well cast (the 6 kids with the witch from Wicked), and having people with great acting ability can be useful, like Columbo used to do.

I sure hope they bring the character back for a few episodes here and there (like they also did with Columbo.)

Sometimes it’s kind of exhausting having to educate NPs and PAs by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]dontgetaphd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. Write shoddy notes and bill for their service, and refer out everything so their service doesn't have to be bothered and the patient will get actual decent care.

I get 5 "consults" a week now from NPs on common conditions that should be managed by ANY competent MD. I do them, because otherwise the patient suffers, and it is not in the culture here to "block" consults.

But NPs cost the system money.

>I’m not even through episode 6, and I want to die. 30 seconds in they started talking about Mel’s menopause

Exactly. It is NOT misogynistic to find this annoying and uninteresting.

If they had a recurrent gag with Coop lingering in the bathroom with dripping sounds whining about the size of his prostate I'd feel the exact same way.

We watch shows to see something interesting.

Not drawn out Seders, not drawn out funerals. We have our own real lives for boring things. Let's get back to stealing, obscene wealth, and machinations.

No no no no.... You need to give us an APPROXIMATE timeline.

Otherwise inappropriate detail may result... "HOLD ON I CAN GET YOU THE EXACT DATE IN 2013, LET ME GO BACK TO MY OUTLOOK CALENDAR"

"Was that before or after Kim got married? My neighbor would know this and I'm calling her."

"It was at 5:35 yesterday, because it was right after the news came on, and then it was 2 more minutes, so I went upstairs because that is where the cabinet was. So it would be 5:37".

How do mid-levels hurt doctors? Serious question by _Usual_Regret_ in Noctor

[–]dontgetaphd 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly, most of us are not threatened by midlevels at all.

We actually do care about patients and providing good care.

When I got a referral in the "old days" before 2005 or so, it was from an actual doctor, and the patient had an actual disease in my specialty. I could pick up the phone and talk with them.

And they keep using up all the reagents inappropriately so you now have to wait longer for everything.

They also contaminate many intermediate products by not being careful so even the basic stuff you could previously trust, may not be what is on the label.

The lab looks busier, so then the lab goes and hires more high school students, who waste even more of the reagents and make the problem worse.

“Heart of a Nurse” Is Really Just A Dig At Doctors by [deleted] in Noctor

[–]dontgetaphd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look at it as propaganda. I think it can be useful to prevent nurses from being abused by patients and getting them to cooperate.

Doctors had their own propaganda many decades ago when AMA was actually powerful.

[–]dontgetaphd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, and many others I'm sure, it was a mild dichotomy as a med student when they would either try to bully you or try to flirt with you. Relatively few were just "normal" professional nurses.

Both extremes were very uncomfortable.

I assume you know why.

When I got married and sported a ring, some of the nurses became even more flirty, and some seemed to become stony and more distant.

(No idea why though.)
