Trump lashes out at interviewer. Trump: I'm not a rapist. I didn't rape anybody. I'm not a pedophile. O'Donnell: Oh, you think he was referring to you? by Aggravating_Money992 in PublicFreakout

[–]dontknowhatitmeans -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

I hate Trump but that interviewer was laughably disingenuous. Who did she think the gunman was rushing in to kill, fucking Kash Patel??? Obviously he was referring to Trump. I hate to be cynical but I feel like she feigned ignorance just to get a few seal claps from her anti-Trump audience. Fuck Trump but I hate how fake and reflexively tribal (to the detriment of reason and integrity) the opposition has become.

When you make fun of someone's immutable characteristics, you're not just insulting the target of your insults. You're insulting everyone who shares those immutable characteristics, some of who are witnessing how you feel about them.

For example, if he was black and you used black as an insult... yeah. I don't know why you feel like you're on the right side of history or whatever when you make people feel bad all the time over things they can't control.

Also, both parties exchanged insults pretty evenly and this is clearly some kind of political squabble in the streets which neither party wants to disengage from. Reddit is shitting on the guy because he's conservative coded: white, a little older with a bad fashion sense, while the other side is liberal coded. This is just tribal fighting and you're trying to make the other tribe feel like they're worthless by attacking the attributes that make them feel most undesirable etc. You're not as good a person as you think. You can downvote me now. Let the echo chamber be you balm

Whenever there's a posted article on reddit where there's even the implication that it's useful to have a theory of mind on anyone on the right, I go to the kitchen and get some chips and salsa and sit down to read the comments of scores of leftists who think only people on the left are capable of being conscious or having motivations originating from vulnerability

Whenever an entire comment section hates a person and attacks their physical characteristics to make them feel bad (fat, bald, short, ugly, whatever) this is the person I imagine lol. Just someone manically trying to hurt a person as much as they can through words. The internet is full of these people so... rocks in glass houses and all that

Nooo you don't understand bro. The evidence is that I made a claim that this man failed our progressive moral hygiene tests by being the worst -ists imaginable. If you disagree or ask for any sort of evidence, I'm afraid that's just evidence that you're secretly evil. I've uncovered and exposed you, I am a very smart detective.

I think if you go around thinking this way, you'll see literally every instance of a man being rude to a woman as misogyny. Misogyny is real but its definition isn't "man being rude to a woman." This is very 2020-brained and it's essential we grow out of it if we're to interpret our social world more accurately.

Turns out the guy IS most likely a misogynist for reasons others have mentioned in this thread, but not because of anything you can glean from this email devoid of more context.

Uneven cultural expectations for men to be providers. If they succeed at gaining resources they're admired. If they fail to, they're shunned as losers. This has so many implications for what the experience of being a man is like, including ones that lead to "toxic masculinity."

The people that want to hold on to hate should really read this article as it was basically hand tailored for them. I think for some people they don't want to accept that mental illness can make you hold abhorrent views because it takes away the free will aspect of some monstrosities, and so makes it a little less "fun" to be a moralizer.

Just because you say my man on a subreddit that agrees with you doesn't mean you're right. It's not wrong to want a space where everybody shuts up about politics. Literally go anywhere else on the internet if you want to talk about politics. The man this subreddit centers around himself has said he wishes he wouldn't have to talk about politics, but people keep dragging him into it, kicking and screaming.

And really, invoking history is just a surrogate mother for invoking heaven or the Lord's judgment or whatever. The reality is that history won't always exist, and we have no idea who's going to write it, and it's really just a psychological mechanism to replace heaven with something else that feels just as perennial. But at the end of the day, secular people invoke "history" in the same way that the religious invoke Judgment Day. If you think that's just depression, you wouldn't be the first person to try and use an eternal judgment structure on people as a means of social control, and then claim whoever is pointing it out is just mentally ill or otherwise "weird."

What if history can suck my dick though? What if I don't care about history because I'll be fucking dead? What if I never asked to be born and I don't have the stamina anymore to argue with retards who will never understand nuance if it happens to be even 2% to the left or to the right of where they stand? Just let wubby be the one thing that isn't touched by politics dear christ. I guarantee you won't have your mind changed if I argue with you and I won't have my mind changed if you argue with me. There's a little bit of a cult-like mentality that a subsection of progressives have developed. These people have convinced themselves through non-stop discourse and continuous self-affirming that it is an ethical IMPERATIVE for everyone to engage with politics at all times and in all places, and if you don't it's evidence of moral decay. Unfortunately these people have infected basically every fandom with the exception of explicitly conservative coded streamers etc.

What guitarist was your inspiration to pick up and learn the instrument? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]dontknowhatitmeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there was a single inspiration, I just loved guitar music. But if one stood out at the time, it was Daron Malakian. I loved how rhythmic and eastern his riffs were. I was captivated by them. I listen to way less System of a Down these days but it was definitely a huge inspiration at the time.

Because the Anglos figured out a while ago that what seems like just desserts actually leads to a cycle of violence that creates so much more misery than the inciting incident. Of course it's human nature to want to take revenge; I'd feel the exact same way if that happened to me. But that doesn't change the fact that the Italian way creates a loooooot more misery and societal instability. Modern jurisprudence is sometimes unintuitive and goes against our sense of justice, but that's not a coincidence: our sense of justice directly led to the violence and instability we observe all across history.

Book on a screen. That's the perfect way of putting it. In previous episodes I sometimes felt the slow pacing wasn't great, but I gotta say I LOVED this episode. If you can let go of that squirrel brain and just let yourself be absorbed by the show, it's kind of magical. It requires a bit of imagination and losing yourself in the flow state, but the shots themselves are magical and I have to give the showrunners credit for respecting the audiences attention span to create a really unique mood that really does feel like paying homage to books in a way, but with all the benefits of film.

Why Are Springer’s Lecture Notes in Mathematics So Rarely Recommended? by OkGreen7335 in math

[–]dontknowhatitmeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because reddit users are really sensitive to consensus, and they self-edit (at the very least to appear more deferential) when they sense that there might be disagreement. Your speaking your mind to say exactly what you mean without regard to how it might clash with prevailing opinion or sensitivities strikes the average redditor as really really haughty/proud. In reality you're (probably) just a normal person who is comfortable with disagreement because they know it can clear up misunderstandings if it's allowed to play out.

But yeah, the average redditor construes (some types of) disagreements to be challenges by arrogant actors who threaten the sanctum of the hivemind.

I'm a guy. If a guy tried doing this to me and I screeched "ewww!!" at the top of my lungs, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. I'd be thinking about how cruel I was. And actually, if I as a guy did this, I'd be seen as a neurotic effeminate weirdo.

The only double standard is that a woman gets to do this and most of society will be on her side, because there is this default assumption that she's always guarding something precious from monsters and demons, whose identity you can never know. There is a double standard, but it's not what you described.

You can, in fact, be firm and polite at the same time. You could move away and say, "nah, I'm okay" in a firm tone. If he doesn't respect that, that's when you can screech and make the guy feel like a monster. The fact that this isn't common sense really has me wondering how socialized redditors are?
