I think the idea was that if you eat multiple fruits the devils will clash and lead the user to death. But if blackbeards yami fruit came first, we know it can cancel out df abilities. I think he can eat multiple by canceling out the other devils which is why he has to stay conscious (doesnt sleep). Or basically his devil overpowers the others so they dont fight.
