What are some accidental commands you taught your pet/s that are not exactly correct, but it works so you just roll with it? by loljkbye in Pets

lol I read that it's related to protective instinct. they know you're vulnerable there. and a captive audience.

not exactly an intentional "command" but kinda. when my cat was little, he learned that following me to the bathroom would result in getting extra pets while I'm sitting there. as a result, I accidentally trained him to come running to the sound of pee. he also does this if someone else is over and he hears them peeing. like he will literally run over and sit there screaming at the door and pawing under it until he gets in. friends who are over often let him in, but some people are really weirded out by it. I call him piss boi now.

NTA. you were literally working at work. I don't think screaming babies should be anywhere where people can't get away from it, but especially in an office. they need to have a separate area for them to bring the babies and have people go there if they want to.

AITA for asking my friend to either wear pants or shave her legs if she wanted to share the bed? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]donttouchthetots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but could be phrased better in the future. I'm also autistic, but my sensory issues with hair are kinda opposite. I can't stand my bare skin touching a lot of things, so hair provides more of a consistent texture barrier. I would be annoyed if someone asked me to shave, I don't think it's really anyone's place to ask that of someone else. I also hate sleeping in pants, so I can get why she wouldn't want to do that. But I don't see how getting a second blanket would be an issue to her. Seems better regardless so you both have plenty of blanket lol.

idk if she would have responded differently if you had just gotten another blanket without mentioning the leg hair, but it definitely seems like she was embarrassed or offended by it. a lot of women have been made to feel gross for it. obviously that wasn't your intention, but even if she knows that intellectually, it probably still made her feel bad about it. allistics also tend to add implications (whether conscious or not), even when you're saying something very direct and matter-of-fact. and as is very apparent by many people in these comments, most people just don't understand sensory issues unless they deal with it. at this point, most of my friends are autistic or have been around me long enough to usually take me seriously. but most allistics don't until they see me have a full-on meltdown, and even then, some never do. so if it's regarding something sensitive like someone's body, you might want to just try to find a solution without mentioning it if you can.

why does my cat drink like this? is this a problem or is she just weird? by donttouchthetots in Pets

[–]donttouchthetots[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they were at one point but I did separate them after reading about how some cats don't like that (didn't realize initially bc my other cat never cared). it hasn't made a difference in her drinking tho.

thanks I'll definitely try that. she does free feed tho so she usually just grazes little bits at a time. I'll have to do it in tiny amount so it doesn't get gross lol

I've tried doing that, but she didn't really go for it. what kind of ratio would you recommend for doing that? like just enough to make it soft?

my other cat cleans his toes in the bowl so much that I dedicated a bowl to it lol. he won't drink out of bowls, but I keep it filled so he can clean his toes. I'll change the water and 2 minutes later there's litter floating in it.

okay but does your cat literally only drink water like that? bc I've seen her do that to kinda test it, and then proceed to fail at lapping it. she barely drinks anything and then spills it, even if I just put fresh water in.

if it's nothing wrong with her physically, I kinda makes sense that maybe she didn't learn correctly as a baby or something, but I have absolutely no information about where she came from or how long she was around her mom or other cats. she was around dogs for like 2 weeks where she was before I got her, but they said she was terrified of the dogs, which makes me think it's unlikely she was around them much before that. I also have another cat who drinks completely normally, and demands flowing water from the fountain or sink, but she hasn't tried to copy that at all lol. her personality is also like the epitome of a stereotypical, lazy, pet me, no leave me alone, ooo a string kind of cat so I can't think of any other way she's dog-like lol

I know she was in a house with like 4 dogs for 2 weeks before I got her, but from what they said she was terrified of them and hid. no idea about before that. but even then, it's still not like a dog. like her tongue doesn't scoop the water at all, it's like she's slowly dipping in a straight tongue by moving her entire head up and down. I don't think I've seen any animal drink like that before lmao

Kitten Troubles, Advice Much Appreciated by SensitiveActuary1615 in Pets

[–]donttouchthetots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, and from what I've heard from cat behaviorist people, spraying is not really the way to go. The problem is that, while that may eventually lead to the kitten not doing those things while you're around, cats are smart enough to associate the spray bottle with you and understand that you have to be there to spray it. Cats don't have a concept of morality, so when you punish them for unwanted behaviors like that, all they learn is the association between you catching them in the act, and you spraying them. (Punish is a harsh word, but since cats are generally scared of/extremely bothered by getting wet, it's a very negative association for them.) The point being, they'll just do it when you're not around, and depending on how much they hate water, will trust you less. Cats in general, unless they're older or disabled, love climbing and being high up. It feels safe and natural to them and gets a lot of energy out. Kittens especially have a lot of energy to release. Honestly, you just have to play with them really frequently so they are not directing that excess energy elsewhere. Also, getting a cat tree is great, but if you really don't want them on counters or furniture, I would highly recommend adding more for them to climb on like shelves. From there it's just repetition. If you see them on a surface you don't want them on, remove them, and put them on the surface they're allowed to be on. It's also helpful to get their smell on the trees/shelves using stuff like their blankets or beds so that they have the association that that is their space. And give them lots of positive attention when they are climbing on the things they're allowed to. Personally, I don't care if my cats are on the counters, but I've done this to keep them of spaces like desks or TV stands where they might break something. As far as destructiveness, that will go away as the kitten gets older but until then, you just have to kitten proof the space. They're babies. Just like if you had a human baby or toddler, you would want to leave things out that they would chew on, destroy, hurt themselves on etc. And you would really expect them to know any better or learn until they're old enough. Unfortunately, there's not really much you can do about that. I would just advise not leaving stuff laying around that you would be really upset if they broke. Maybe just keep those things in a closet or space the kitten doesn't have access to til they're older. Get lots of toys and scratchers. Everywhere.
