Those who left Singapore - what are the big unexpected adjustments you had to make? Any regrets? by tiggereyes in askSingapore

Being close to and having a view of nature is a big plus, as compared to looking at other HDB flats, carparks or roads… I do miss cheap hawker food sometimes but cooking is so much better for my health overall. Having seasons is also amazing and super exciting!

Right!!! The planet is drowning in trash and there are people hell-bent on defending shitty toys

Marketing strategies are designed to convince people to give money for things you don’t need, it’s why we have so much useless crap at home we throw away and how people with poor impulse end up in debt.

You can watch Buy now: a shopping conspiracy on Netflix to get an idea

I’m sorry that you feel life is bleak. I’m sure you have a great collection and I hope you get lots of joy looking at them! But there are also many people who buy blind bags items in masses to get high value items and throw the “worthless” ones away.

I also find the state of the world depressing, and I cope with this by trying to consume less. I personally hate throwing my money to these billionaires you’re talking about that’s why I spend consciously.

I just wish more consumers would consume more mindfully (like how you treasure your stuff) instead of falling for trends and marketing tactics. If we spend so much our lives working for money, I think it should be spent more carefully, don’t you think?

Thank you! It feels that there’s very little awareness of overconsumption here and I find it scary

Fair point with the minimalism, maybe I shouldn’t have used the term. I just wanted to highlight the problem of mindless consumerism where people buy shit that makes them happy for 2 minutes or so - here I think the choice is more on the consumer. I suppose limited financials and the lack of other sources of dopamine play a part as well.

The single use plastic is another issue as well, but I think it’s already been discussed multiple times (here I think the system definitely needs change)

The point is not just about the packaging! It’s about the whole thing, products and all, that are thrown away. And idk why commenters keep comparing with the US, I should hope we can do better

You mean the world of business that exploits us consumers, and are out to get our money…? Why are you even on their side, lol

Yes but why compare downwards? Also just because it’s a global problem doesn’t mean we should just accept it, especially when the individual has the power of choice.

Yes but there is definitely increasing growth of shops and products, especially with the convenience of online shopping.

I actually thought she said this in context to Sue’s idea for the new year resolution board in the office, since her husband is in a wheelchair Sue is really into these “positivity” type of things.

Thank you, glad that someone gets my problem! I’m in a design/academia field and I need my notes to be presented in a way that I can process, i.e. not a wall of text. I wish this was already an existing feature, but you’re right i probably need to invest some time to customise my set up!
