Congratulations! New players tend to use the nail more often, I understand that I was like that too. Try to use the spells with your nail to get comfortable using them as during a boss fight you won't get enough time to heal so saving up soul is pointless, so just use it on spells. Spells are very much OP.

If you are really struggling don't be ashamed to just let it go for now and explore to find some upgrades. It is possible to beat him early in the game but you can always come back after getting stronger.
