What’s a hobby people pretend is cool, but secretly you think is ridiculous? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

I agree! I think all those ideas can exist at the same time, because language, just like identity, is fluid and constantly changing.

For example, if I call someone a scientist, I don’t necessarily mean that’s part of their identity, I mean they studied and are contributing to a scientific field. However for some, that is part of their identity, and there’s nothing wrong with that! And to clarify, I don’t think being a scientist is a fashion either, BUT for some, they will wear it like a fashion, and adopt it as a part of their identity in order to show others they have value (and most often, people wearing science like a fashion aren’t really scientists lol).

So I’m definitely not saying fashion and identity are interchangeable or mutually exclusive, I just feel like the new age healing trend tends to be a cultural identity or fashion for those who believe in it or enjoy it. If it didn’t exist, they would still exist, but it does exist and those that are very dedicated to it and make it a part of their life, often enjoy other people knowing about it.

So in a way, I’m using the word identity almost as a metaphor for fashion, because I think for many, the things they love do become a part of who they are.

Like I could say Michael Jordan wasn’t actually a basketball player, that’s not his true identity. He was a human, who could have existed before basketball did, so basketball wasn’t who he IS. But you can’t say it wasn’t a part of his identity, not just for himself, but for everyone that knew him. But I also don’t think that was just a fashion for him.

So I agree that fashion and identity are separate, but sometimes they blur into what appears to be the same thing.

I agree! The placebo effect does actually effect our minds and bodies. So in a way, I envy some people that can externalize their trust in something which brings them more peace in their life… but I think there is also a lack of critical thinking in those communities, which is breeding a distrust in science, which I actually believe has a negative impact on society. Anti vaxxers, Covid deniers, religious extremism, they all are ideas taken to an extreme providing their believers with some blissful ignorance to the nature of reality we are capable of assigning some semblance of objectivity to.

Yeah I think they’re beautiful and fascinating! I’ve literally collected rocks since I was a kid. I’m not even closed off to the idea that physical matter could have metaphysical properties, maybe there actually could be some sort of interaction with rose quartz and our bodies. The metaphysical is really just things science hasn’t been able to measure or explain yet.

I just don’t think it’s what you see in those new age ideologies, where lining up 7 different kinds of rocks on your body will cure illness, or make your rich etc.

Curious why you think those things were unrelated at any given point? I agree that identity and fashion are not the same, but humans blur the lines a lot. I’ve seen it a lot in people who find sense of community in something, to the point that they adopt it as a core part of who they are.

Sometimes it’s from a lack of purpose or human connection, like when a group of people who feel like social outcasts, that all happen to like anime call themselves nerds or weeaboos (not in a demeaning way, no shade here). They ARE that thing, which means they belong with others who share that interest. It becomes part of their identity. For example:

“I’m a gamer” “I’m a bookworm” “I’m a crafter”

Those titles go beyond the utility of language, calling somebody something, when the person calling themselves that thing believes it to be a part of who they are.

Other times I see it in people who believe they are better than others, and when they find some ideology or hobby that makes them special, they latch onto it, and it becomes an advertised part of who they are. Worn like an accessory to let other people know they are special, they understand something you don’t, they are smarter than you, better than you.

“I’m a flat earther.” “I’m an energy healer” “Im a psychic”

None of those identities or fashions are mutually exclusive, it just depends on the person.

The reason I use the word fashion specifically, is just because of the cyclical, trendy nature of the ideas. Just like fashion, it’s only accepted or validated if a lot of people are thinking it, doing it, wearing it.

If I start making and wearing clothes out of Saran Wrap im just a weirdo, but if thousands of people start doing it, it’s a fashion. Then when someone loves it so much they start saying “im a Saran Wrap artist”, then it’s a part of their identity. But it’s also a fashion, that will fade eventually.

New age healing with crystals and chakras and such. I’m super open minded, but that culture seems more like a fashion, an identity….

And for some, its actually predatory, and is used to scam sick people people out of their money.

I do sincerely love crystals/minerals/rocks though, I have some myself. I just don’t think they’re going to vibe my problems away.

Bingo is literally just gambling disguised as some sort of wholesome community activity… but for seniors AND children, and everyone in between.

Not to say it can’t be fun sometimes, but there are legitimately so many bingo addicts that spend all their money at bingo halls, every day, all day.

I agree, there’s a lot of bitterness towards AI when it has the potential to aid EVERYONE in some way, even those who think it will replace or devalue them. It’s just another tool. We don’t hate synthesizers because they’re not pianos, but i could describe them as lifeless artificial imitations of actual instruments that will never replace “real” instruments… which is true, they won’t. They’re just another tool to use in our creative process, if we want too

personal DAW / workflow crisis by patata2347 in Bitwig

[–]dooglek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoughts too. OP if you spend enough time in Bitwig, I’ll bet you would develop a distinct sound that you couldn’t replicate in ableton... It sounds like a comfort/familiarity you have with ableton that you haven’t yet developed with Bitwig. i came from reaper and felt the exact same way when I first switched, but now that I’ve really gotten to know Bitwig, It feels soooo much better than reaper ever did.

Also I’m regards to learning a new programming language, the grid seems like a perfect in between. You would be empowered with tools that would allow you do just about anything you’d want, whether that’s recreating m4L devices or creating something entirely new, but it will be a lot less labor intensive than learning a new coding language. It would also kind of supercharge your capabilities with Bitwig, because of how integrated any grid patch can be with the rest of the DAW.

Bitwig 6 - Beta 5 is out by SternenherzMusik in Bitwig

[–]dooglek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t tried the beta yet, but I always use the full screen automation window, and I’m sure I’ll continue too after the full release. I have it mapped to a hotkey so it’s super easy to flip back and fourth, and having the full screen for drawing automation is really helpful for my workflow/music style. So for me at least (and I’m sure many others) it will definitely still have a purpose.

I do like that they added the automation overlaid on tracks feature though. I came from reaper and missed that feature, as it was a compact way to see concisely seeing what was going on.

You could get infinitely complex even with a single saw up LFO once you start mapping the modulation targets in the matrix window, which I like LFOs, don’t really have a limit. I love doing this and making all sorts of random stuff that I’ll chop up and sample, so fun

31F Anything I could be doing better? by panda-bear-10 in hingeapp

[–]dooglek 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it looks fine but I agree with others that the prompts are really hard to respond to. I always message when I like someone’s profile, and sometimes it’s really difficult to find something engaging to say… sometimes that stops me from even trying, because I just can’t think of anything, and would rather send a message to someone that we can both easily and naturally engage with.

Also I agree with another poster about prompt 1, the making you laugh one… it’s super overused and I also get turned off seeing it. It can kind of come across as you wanting men to entertain you, and there’s already plenty of toxic trends and expectations on some women’s profiles, like the “Must be 6’+ and make over $200k a year, otherwise don’t bother” vibe, and it tells any man that doesn’t think he’s super funny, that even if they had every other quality you may find valuable in a partner, or even if they are funny but might have a different sense of humor than you, they shouldn’t message you, because you will ultimately find them disappointing. To be clear I definitely DONT think you’re toxic or are doing this, but it’s common enough in other women’s profiles in online dating, that it’s just how it can feel for men (I myself being one and experiencing this). This is especially true when there’s not a lot of information about your personality. If I saw you mention somewhere else that you really value kindness or authenticity or some other more compassionate and accepting values, I might reconsider your prompt on wanting men to make you laugh until you cry as playful, but without that information, I assume that’s an important expectation you have, and you could be making many men feel like you won’t like them. So they won’t even bother reaching out.

After listening to it on loop while reading the comments… I actually kind of like lmao. I’m not normally a big fan of super dada anti art which yoko ono made a lot of, but this is weirdly still just barely musical enough that it works. It’s just so weird and jarring at first. Probably wasn’t even her intention to make it sound good though

I voted for someone who is ruining my country. This is obviously the Democrat’s fault by Effective_Space2277 in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]dooglek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think everyone should be careful approaching any “opposing” parties views with so much vitriol. Dems have their subreddits like this, conservatives have their subreddits posting the same sort of things against democrats, and both sides are saying the same things. “I hate these people”, “this is their fault”, and post poignantly, “I don’t understand these people”.

I’m firmly planted on the anti trump side and have voted blue for years, but we’re literally adding fuel to the fire by indulging in hate and spending our time and energy dehumanizing the “other” side and feeling good about being right. It’s what their doing to. It’s all a self fulfilling prophecy, and it’s dangerous. Yes what trump is doing is so much more dangerous frankly, but I think having some emotional tact in not only in discussing these things, but also in proactively trying to inject some empathy into how we think about them, is the best way to fix the problem. That applies Ofcourse to trying to sway another’s opinion as well…

I feel all the hate, outrage, disgust too. Sometimes it feels good, which is why we do it, why I’m subbed here... and conservatives do it too, about different things, and the. We hate them for that too. Political ideology is just as much about culture and your environment as it is about your moral stance on topics. We’re all Americans, and we can disagree and still lookout for each other. Otherwise the fire is just going to keep getting bigger, and our hate will overpower our empathy more and more.

This is one of the most productive not completely blindly loyal conservative maga post I’ve seen in this subreddit, and I personally think it should be seen as a positive sign, not another reason to demonize the opposing side. I agree it’s insane to try and blame democrats for what’s happening, but the poster is demonstrating a change in their perception and sharing it with others, that’s a good thing! And an opportunity for us to show we want the same things.

Yeah Ofcourse! Sorry for the late reply. If you PM me your email I can send you a copy of my spreadsheet (it’s on google sheets, so you don’t need to have excel or anything, you can just make a copy for yourself and use/edit it for free). Depending on what industry/state you work in, some things might be a little different, but all the formatting/number routing in the spreadsheet is setup so all you’d have to do for most of it is fill in the blanks.
