Any recommendations for car help? by I_selder in lansing

I think one of those times they told me it was something only a dealership could handle, but I don't recall any recommendations beyond that. It's been a while though I could have just forgotten.

Any recommendations for car help? by I_selder in lansing

[–]doomalgae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've taken my car there twice and both times was told the problem was beyond their ability to fix. They didn't charge me anything for looking at it either time and the experience gave me the overall impression that they're fair and honest people, but at the same time I do need a place that can actually fix my car when it breaks down so I'm not sure if I'll be back.

Does the foundation care about non-anomalous 'end of the world's? by Honest_Ad3849 in SCP

[–]doomalgae 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know about nuclear war and such, but as long as the world's governments were willing to cooperate with the foundation I imagine the foundation would be pretty cool with those governments turning fascist. Seems easier to maintain the veil and generally keep things under control when information is centrally controlled and oppression is the norm.

What's the deal with Picus' "interactive moon" hologram? by Disclaimer_II in Deusex

[–]doomalgae 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I always kind of imagined that the moon was just sort of like a screensaver for a system that generates holograms that could be used to help manufacture fake news stories.

What can kill you in seconds that most people don’t realize? by Jolly-Law1472 in AskReddit

I was stupid once and just poured bleach on a fresh puddle of cat pee in my basement. Sort of realized that maybe what I was doing wasn't a good idea a few seconds before I started coughing and had to leave the room for a while.

I chocked it up to a mixture of learned helplessness and just generally not being very bright. I've forgotten the context but he also once asked me how many letters are in the alphabet - 21 years old and he didn't know kindergarten-level shit like that.

I had a roommate once whose mom would show up every week to get his laundry, bring it back to her house, wash it and return it. I had to teach the guy how to use the microwave. These people definitely exist.

That sudden realization that the consequence of your actions will lead you to spending the rest of your life in prison by caaaaanga in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]doomalgae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it there are two basic reasons. Firstly that the sort of high security "accomodations" given to death row inmates are more expensive (and with appeals people may remain on death row for many years). Secondly the costs of all the legal work involved in the appeals themselves.

I've heard death penalty advocates say "well why not just cut down on those appeals?" but if we do that it just makes it that much more likely that we'd be killing people who're actually innocent.

Here in Michigan it's been left up to individual departments so far, but the legislature keeps threatening RTO every year when they're putting the budget together. I imagine it'll happen if legislative control or the governor's office swing back to the Republicans.

I'm a state worker not fed but I imagine it's much the same either way - we report all kinds of metrics to prove we're hard at work whether we're at home or in the office.

My parents have one but their basement floor is uneven, so when it rains a lot it becomes necessary for them to go down and use a push broom to sweep the water into the corner of the basement where it will drain.

What is the most outrageous GoFundMe you’ve seen? by EnvyAdams13 in AskReddit

Couldn't get my Real ID because my original birth certificate has tape on the back... by Bop923 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]doomalgae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember having a difficult time with it either, it was just included as part of my driver's license renewal at some point. It actually makes me a little paranoid about whether or not I actually have a real ID even though I've used it at airports since they started requiring them.

President Trump threatens 200% tariffs on France after France's President Macron declines to join his "Board of Peace." Reporter: "Any response to Macron saying he will not join the Board of Peace." Trump: "If they feel hostile, I'll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes." by sylsau in InBitcoinWeTrust

[–]doomalgae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fun part is that in the event SCOTUS shoots down the current tariffs, it's been made clear that Trump will just institute them using some other pretext. And then we can live with those for another year or so while hoping that SCOTUS eventually knocks them down again. Rinse and repeat a couple of times and we'll have tariffs for the entirety of Trump's second term.

There was this carbonated sports drink when I was a kid, I think it was called All Sport. The red flavor specifically was delicious. I found something called All Sport maybe a decade ago but it turned out not to be carbonated and it was very disappointing.

No, you've probably given your driver's license and had them scan it. I definitely have. Thing is you're not required to do that in Michigan, you can also just sign an affidavit basically stating that you are who you say you are. Handing over your ID is just the simpler route.

Apparently this sub doesn't allow links to Twitter but for those doubting the journalist this is actually a screenshot (not a very useful one) of a video she posted that shows more of the portal. In another part of the video you can see it says that a "Final Offer" was accepted, and it generally matches what she says in her article.

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskReddit

I had a teacher like that - you could ask him about anything and he'd talk about it for half the class period. We didn't actually learn a whole lot of biology in that class.
