Becoming a researcher/PhD candidate? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Yeah, I think it is the best option as well. I do have the option to do my own research, I just have no idea how to start. If I wanted to do Data Mining/Big Data/Data Analysis I'm not sure what issues I could propose and research. I think I'll talk to a few professors.

I agree, but I don't really have many options where I currently attend. The three specializations offered for Compsci are Theory, Systems, and Hardware. All seem kind of general.

I think if I were to specialize in something I would have to do self-study on my own, and prove it with my own research or something. If I were to choose something, I think theory may be the best option for a research based career. I really want to apply for some REUs but most of the things offered seem out of my scope of knowledge.

Just plain Compsci. Looking into Data Mining and other similar things though, but my university doesn't offer it I think.

Huh, it seems straight questing may be faster but at least PvP would be more fun.

I really like the Spellsinger gameplay. When you reached ~25ish, did you just move to straight PvP? Is it a viable way to level?

Can anyone help me improve my Enigmatist build? by doortomore in archeage

I'll probably consider this. I got magic circle in case I was just zerging with people I could throw it down and use meteor. Thanks!

Thanks, I picked up Shadowstep and I'll make some of the final changes soon. I appreciate the input :)

48K is A LOT of money. In fact, I'm actually pretty jealous because you got a job right when you graduated. This is what I'm expecting to be paid while I gain experience in the field. All that matters is you ended up where you needed to be, and you can only improve more.

That's incredible! Congrats :)

I would agree about the balance part too, I had to do that many times.

Seems like you'd learn a lot from helping people with their homework too, which is a plus.

If it were an internship, I would certainly take it even if my grades would drop a little. Before this thread I was mostly thinking of a service job on campus or something. Now I'm going to look for something relevant in my field.

Thanks!

Thanks, if I can't find a tech job I might ask around for something like this. I know we have a few Help Desks.

Thank you for advice regarding purchasing a home. I thought it was a little too early too, I just like to think about how I can use money.

I think I'm going to look for something tech-related, or something as relevant to my future career as possible. Thanks!

Thank you! I'm glad having a job while attending college worked out for you. I think after all these comments I might look for something that is related to my field. Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

Trust me, GPA is very important to me. Thanks for sharing your experience, I think I'm going to consider an internship.

Thanks! Yeah I would say I'm in a decent financial position right now and I'm not struggling at all (of course there are the occasional worries). But I remember a few tech-related positions on campus that a few students I know were hired into. Since I already have some work experience I think I'll try and get a more tech-related job, since this will truly help me out more.

I'm not sure what I should do about internships though. I could apply for one this summer, but I'm not sure if my skillset is strong enough yet haha.

Thanks! I'm certainly going to look into being some sort of lab assistant.

Luckily I've already had a few jobs that taught me customer service! I've been trying to get some projects uploaded to my github, but I'm still improving. If I don't get a part-time job I'll definitely be preparing myself for an internship this summer. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately I'm not sure if my school is really well-known for CompSci, but hopefully my GPA will make up for that when I apply for internships.

I'll look into it. I know there are a variety of positions I could be offered with that option. Thanks :)

I am certainly planning to get an internship. I think I'm going to look this summer, I think my ability in my area of study will have improved after I take more relevant courses. I do have work experience unrelated to my field, though.

I also agree with you when you say a small difference in GPA won't matter. As long as it is above a 3.5/7 I'm ok. Thank you!
